Derailleur Wobble/Chain Ring and Cassette Wear

I'm working on a restoration of an '85 Bianchi Limited with Shimano New 600EX components. It's been in storage 30 years or so.

The RD cage is wobbly which causes the pulleys to be misaligned with the cogs. Is this type of wear repairable? I haven't disassembled the component yet.

I've also attached pics of the chain ring and cassette. Can anyone comment on the condition?

Took the bike out for the first ride after reassembly. Under heavy load, there is some chain slip. I'm not sure if this is related to wear on the cogs or the RD alignment.

I installed a new chain, and I believe I have the chain length correct.

Thank you.

Freewheel/cassette wear is difficult to evaluate, but a new chain will "skip" across worn teeth.

Your rear derailer pulleys are quite misaligned with the cassette. The hanger and/or derailer itself is bent. Start by straightening the hanger.

The derailleur mounts directly to the frame. There's no hanger. I don't believe the cage itself is bent.

I think the misalignment is caused by the play in the connection between the cage and body. Here's a photo of me manually holding the cage in alignment.

That's a still called a derailleur hanger it's just built into the dropout. Looking like six speed you can do a pretty good job aligning by eye with an adjustable wrench. I personally use a 3" M10 x 1.0 bolt threaded into the hanger to align them so as no chance to cause any issue with the threads, but have done enough with just a wrench. Align up/down and L/R. see 8:00 in this video.

And don't use those pliers to straighten it. Use an adjustable wrench.

Another method to align without a hanger alignment tool.

Thanks to you that helped out. As a newbie to bike mechanics, it's nice to have a place to run to when help is needed.

I ended up rebuilding the derailleur and while I was at it, I figured I'd give it a little polish. It's now missing the branding, but looks a bit better.

I did my best to get the hanger straight. Having already cleaned up the threads with a tap and die, I didn't want to risk further unreversible damage.

I think that cable stop is designed for pre-index shifting, the housing just fits directly into the stop w/o a ferrule. If you are using indexed shifting, I think you can get "step down" ferrules. Larger at the housing end, smaller at the other end to fit inside the cable stop..

Thanks for pointing that out.

I looked at some photos prior to disassembly and I see that I installed the cable housing backwards. I also found the original ferrule that attached to the frame side in my parts bin. I'll work on it after a test ride.

How's it look now? The ferrule is what you describe as a "step-down" ferrule.

Here's a recent pic of the completed bike...
