Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Right. I don't think I would ever confuse an old Alfa, or even a new Alfa, for a set of quick struts. Though, a set of quick struts are likely more reliable than a new Alfa.

One day they'll have to reopen it and deal with what happens. Right now no one knows just how much it's tanked.

Absolutely. Before Conrail was acquired and mostly split up we served that area. The line going down there was affectionately called the Purdue Secondary. Lots of cars of grain for the chicken farms.

Good call. You'll zip right through it. Mark the spindles before removal to aid in close alignment settings.

I compressed automotive springs a time or two in my youth. With rented equipment. #livingdangerously

Will do. I debated whether to get struts or just another van

If this van lasts 'til 220000 before the lower intake manifold goes or the transmission croaks, I'll be happy I went with the new struts.

I did two of those intake gaskets a day, which for an indie, was pretty OK. Transmissions? Not my forte

I had to make a decision about the Subaru Outback, where it needed new head gaskets just to pass smog, but it was otherwise fine. If the Blue Book value of a car is $X, and it's got a mechanical problem that won't let you register it that will cost $X - 500 to fix, but you don't have the 4-5 X for a new car......

There are certain years of Subie that have two types. One type is the one that needs head gaskets, the other type is the one that just got head gaskets. Unfortunately the type that just got head gaskets morphs into the type that needs head gaskets, rather quickly. Subaru's have many such idiosyncrasies, sadly. The newer one's seem to be a bit more bulletproof.

It's quite the change going from the Subaru that drank oil to the Dodge where it takes the entire time between oil changes to lose a quart of oil. 10,000 miles, and that's the car telling me when to change it.

My brother had a 01 Forester and my mother had an 08 so I've known about the head gasket thing for a while. I also know that it's pretty critical to replace the timing belt around 100k and while you're in there it's best to replace some accessory components that are easy to get to since the engine has to be pulled.

I never ended up buying one for myself because every one for sale had over 100k and none of that work done, but priced like you wouldn't need to put $3k into it just to keep the pistons from getting cozy with the valves at any moment. Which is what happened to my mother's.

Humbolt hill is nearby. It's partially gravel though. You can start farther out for more elevation gain and more miles.

I want to hit this one sometime, but start from farther out and go further past the end of this segment. Nice curvy road is fun in the car, should be super fun on a bike.
