I had to make a decision about the Subaru Outback, where it needed new head gaskets just to pass smog, but it was otherwise fine. If the Blue Book value of a car is $X, and it's got a mechanical problem that won't let you register it that will cost $X - 500 to fix, but you don't have the 4-5 X for a new car......

I never ended up buying one for myself because every one for sale had over 100k and none of that work done, but priced like you wouldn't need to put $3k into it just to keep the pistons from getting cozy with the valves at any moment. Which is what happened to my mother's.
