Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2 (1970s)

Hi guys,

My grandpa left me with this chrome Schwinn Super Le Tour 12.2 that he bought back in the late 1970s for around $900. I cannot find this on the internet so I'm thinking it may be a special edition. Does anyone know how much this would be worth?

Thank you!

I had a late 70's 12.2 in red, a buddy had a chrome one. In my memory we paid somewhere around $260-$280 for them, new.

I don't follow them these days..someone else will be along with an estimate shortly.

edit..here's a references with prices:

Check the head badge for a 4-digit code. IIRC, first three are the day number and last digit is the last number of the year in 1970. Mine is stamped 1787 (178th day of 1977). I have a 1977 in silver. Chrome was $50 extra. The catalog page is from 1977.

The frame is one of the only original parts on this bike.

I doubt he paid 900 for it in the late 70s, when in 78 you could go to your local Schwinn dealer and buy a chrome one for 280. Back in the day, it wasn’t hard to find one in chrome. The frame on yours is very nice, but as posted earlier, hardly any of the components are original, but many are better then the original, so your grandfather definitely stuck some more money into it.
Actually pretty nice build, except for the brake hoods. Possibly the 900 figure is everything he had into it. Anyway, recently rebuilt my brothers very nice original chrome 12.2, that had a large frame like yours, and eventually we got 300 dollars for it.

Wow! That bike has some really interesting upgrades. The wheels are super light racing wheels, what I would call time trial wheels. The tires are glued on to that style wheel. Very nicely built bike and super clean. I would value it at $600.

With chrome Paramounts at that time going for about $500, a chrome 12.2 would have been a lot less.

Components do not appear original, but what I am seeing are upgrades (better than original).

Chrome bikes always bring more $$, and the upgrades are nice too. I can see it selling for $400 to $500 on a local sale, depending where you live.

Looks like a Phil Wood rear hub, plus mostly first generation Dura Ace parts, its a nice one! I've used black Cane Creek lever hoods, not perfect, but they look pretty good on those DA levers.
