Everybody understands why something in its original packaging, still factory sealed, is more valuable. We all understand the basic economics, as fueled by those people that somehow get more enjoyment out of not using something as designed and slightly torturing themselves.
But turning functional objects into untouchable and unusable "collectables" represents, in my opinion, something of a hangup. Not just for the reason mentioned above, but also because you are consciously increasing the price that other people will have to pay to use an item as intended. And yes, I am a capitalist, but I believe that speculating on certain items and in certain ways is morally questionable.

Yeah, that's the topic at hand. Nobody is implying that this topic somehow supersedes others. Having said that, this topic also brings into question how we function as a society, and discussing economic morality is hardly trivial...

If you want to talk about morality I'd say the entire concept of spending money to collect old things for personal entertainment is amoral in a world where (at least) hundreds of millions of people go without basic necessities on a regular basis. But whatcha gonna do? I'm just along for the ride.

Nothing against the OP in particular but some buyers do become a royal PITA and must be sent to Siberia bidding land. I have items for sale on ebay with all BIN prices, make offer. Buyer gives like a 40% offer of the asking price- denied. So he goes up a little- denied. Not even worth a counter offer. Then he starts asking questions. Bad vibe so on to Siberia blocking for him.
This could be like in Pulp Fiction. What's in the case Jules?

Most of this conversation has been centered on buyer-seller interactions, the idea of keeping/selling old things in packaging, and valuation. You've brought up morality in response to my posts but that's not an issue for me, nor does it seem to be for most responders here. I personally don't think moral dilemmas worth expending thought energy on extend to such trivial matters. I'm posting here because I'm bored and enjoy light back and forth conversations.

You need to find some real problems to worry about. Again, it's little bits of old plastic, metal, and cardboard...

And, by the way, that doesn't mean I don't believe there's room to leave some rare items sealed until there aren't enough left open to meet demand for actual use. I don't buy sealed vintage bicycle parts because there are already open ones I can get cheaper. But if I came into possession of a rare part in it's original packaging and could find another to use, I would be inclined to leave it packaged until I sold it as an investment. What the next person does with it really isn't my business.
If they wanted to use it I would probably recommend they find the open one for less money, which was the original point I tried to bring across with my tongue-in-cheek absolutist tone.

It would be a fitting if one of the levers were black and one silver.
There would be another 200 posts.

...maybe you could tell us which variant of the levers you're looking for? It might help you on your quest.
I also wanted to add that, in this particular case, I'm aware that this lever came in a few different colors. Some dipped in rubber and some not. I can't tell from the outside of the box what this particular lever looks like. I may be a very particular case: I'm trying to find the levers I used as a kid, for sentimental purposes. If it's the wrong color, I'm not sure that would be returnable, especially since I'd already have opened the sealed box...
I'll reiterate my earlier observation, which I know because I happened to ride these levers in the 80s: they came in multiple colors and coatings. Also, Google. These details are not made clear in the auction. Many who rebuild vintage bikes as a hobby are fond of color coordinating, so I thought this was not an unimportant point, though no one has responded to it.

Yes, it's difficult to see...but there's no other explanation for the naming convention. It means ftwelder's SS-5's are silver.

I might have to buy them, open them up then burn them just to prove to some people that I don't have "unresolved issues," apparently.

Or maybe the winner should be whoever has the greatest negative balance on ebay over the course of a year

Well what I got out of this thread is:
If I was going to do psychedelics and discuss Quantum Physics and Robert M. Pirsig's works, I would want to do it with Ai Weiwei.

Why didn't Suntour come up with a less cryptic way of identifying these things in black, purple, and blue anyway?
