Found a Good Rattle Can Paint
I am not one of those guys that can afford the primo Powder Coat paint job - And I totally agree that Powder Coat offers the best and most durable finish you can get other than plating your bike - But I recently used a brand of rattle can paint that I am most impressed with - It is Dupli-Color Engine Paint Ceramic - In the past I have used Krylon and various generic brands including John Deer tractor paint - After a few moths of ridding I ended up with small dings and chips no matter how careful I was with the primer - This time I used the engine paint and hung it in the attic for a week - Here in Texas attics are at least 100+ degrees on any sunny day - I assembled the bike and have ridden it during winter months (in central Texas thats only about 50-60 degrees cold, and no snow or ice - Thank You) - But I am a heavy guy and ride on various road surfaces some of them dirt and mostly with small rocks - And yes I am one of those big guys that does fall down in soft dirt - BUT - The bike and impressively the paint has held up VERY WELL - In fact much better than any rattle can paint I have used before - Included are pictures of the areas most effected by road kick back - Note the area on the forks and under the bottom bracket are still in good shape - I have not tried the other colors but this orange holds up well - So if you have to go to a rattle can I would consider this brand...

zandoval, looks good. How's the color selection, being an engine paint I would think it might be limited, but hoping I'm wrong.

Looks nice, kind of like a Surly or a Vanilla. Locally have a shop that charges 50$ to powder coat a frame. Now i'm not sure if I want to do it myself or pay.

Thankyou for the insightful, outside-da-box method; and the website. Perhaps their truck bed paint or coating has a usefulness applied to lower frame (chainstays, bottom bracket, downtube juncture - 'the sprayed zone') as a durable barrier to road spray et.al -like an oldtime zeibart underbelly.

Thankyou for the insightful, outside-da-box method; and the website. Perhaps their truck bed paint or coating has a usefulness applied to lower frame (chainstays, bottom bracket, downtube juncture - 'the sprayed zone') as a durable barrier to road spray et.al -like an oldtime zeibart underbelly.

Another BF member used it to do his bike a while back https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-International I liked it so much I am planning to do it to a bike I have. Now your bike confirms that it is a viable option for durability. I think it looks fine and apparently holds up quite well. Thanks for posting your experience.

Dupli Color is top shelf stuff. I use the Perfect Match, lacquer with clear coat.
It will chip, but easily repaired. Comes in lots of nice colors.
I may try the engine paint on one next time.
Near perfect match on an old Ironman MTB.

This is a really great idea!! I have used ceramic spray paint on the brake calipers of my Corvette and it has held up awesome for about 3 years...and that was with very minimal prep, no chips no peels. never crossed my mind to try it on a bike frame... Will have to try it out sometime. Oh, and the idea of baking the paint on in the attic... GREAT!

Thanks for this. I have a Team Fuji frame in need of serious love donated by another member. My plan was a SS...I guess I should look at getting it stripped (once I get the rest of the bikes all tidied up).
How much is this stuff a can? Did you use the primer?

Used plenty of it on engines and no complaints with the product but the colors are limited especially when looking for light colors and Metallics out side Pontiac Blue, Oldsmobile Rocket Gold.
I have used their regular touch up paints with good success on my Suburban that had a piss poor dealer repaint (80's paint adhesion problem) and it seem to hold up fine. I may actually be painting one of my project bikes in the next couple weeks. I'll update when I get it done.

Oh man I should of tried this stuff out instead. I used the primer and paint in one spray paint and it laid down pretty good on bare clean aluminum. Then went to lay another coat down and it started to crack in a places. I could of cried.

In the past one of the best paints I used to paint motorcycle frames & swing arms with was Briggs & Stratton Engine enamel ( yes the paint for lawn mower engines) it was very durable and oil and gas resistant. It only came in a handful of colors with one of my favorites being discontinued Pewter Mist. I had thought about using the black paint to do my Dawes Super Galaxy. I also have used the Dupli-Color Engine Enamel ( just last week) to paint a tandem frame with but it is to soon to see how it will hold up.
A few pics that I have of the Briggs paint, Pewter Mist is almost the same color silver Honda used in the 80's on some of there dirt bike swing arms, I have ridden the bikes I have redone with it and as I stated it holds up fantastic. The first two pics I used B&S Paint on the motor & swing arm. The third Picture is a Honda XL500R and if the paint held up to this beast with it's trench digging power painting a bicycle with it should be bomb proof.
This is the tandem I just painted black with the Dupli-Color, I just taped off the decals.

Bumping this thread because I'm thinking of painting my Trek 660 with engine enamel. My question is how orange is Hemi Orange? Is it more red than orange or is a true orange?

I've used the "Hemi" orange paint. It's a bit more on the Orange side of Orange. If you want a redish Orange stick with the Chevrolet Orange. Now if you want a yellowish Orange go for the "Race Hemi" orange or early Hemi Orange. I know, I've worked on Mopars all my life.

+1 on the OP's choice. I used the Ford blue. It matches up perfectly with the blue color Lejeunes came in.
