Yes I just rode off the front of the group ride for like 7 miles today (it was the casual wednesday pace) and I couldn't have done that if i wasn't on narrow tires. I have a 23 up front and a 25 in the back. IDK why people insist that wide tires are just as fast, or even worse, that fat people can't ride on narrow tires. You just gotta pump them super hard..

Do any of you have like having hearing protection the pumping a tire? Recently ive had multiple blowouts (I sometimes get frustrated/rushed when patching tubes and reinstalling) and I have some anxiety around pumping tires up to pressure. Im pretty anal about hearing protection at work, and my ears have rung from blowouts, thinking of getting some earplugs to wear. Ive even been holding back on the pressure and keeping it at around 100-120 when I really want to be running 140+ on most tires because I just don't trust it not to explode.

2) Shouldn't =/= can't. A lot of things CAN be done, but not all of them should.

While air pressure usually varies by riders’ weight, most Tour competitors race on something between 6.5 and 8 bar (94-116psi)

I've been riding on the road since my days in the first bike shop in 1975. I've ridden all kinds of bikes on all kinds of tires and I can tell the OP with certainty that wider tires, good tires, at lower pressures are just as fast as 23's pumped to 140 lbs (especially on rough roads) but are a whole lot more comfortable. I'm 6' 2" and weigh around 220.
As for tires blowing out on mounting, lots of good advice above for that. I've only blown out a handful of tires in my life and each time was my fault for not fully seating the bead.
As for hearing protection, plugs work fine. For popping bike tires it doesn't matter what you get.

I’d recommend a jockstrap as well - if that tire lets go there’s going to rubber shrapnel everywhere.
