The traditional school of thought is that jersey over bibs is more streamlined aerodynamically, but the new school thinks tucking jersey under tighty whities creates just enough of a bump which acts as a vortex generator.

Au contraire, mon frere. A snug-fitting jersey can be more aero than skin, especially the textured ones. This is especially true if you're one of us older guys with unwelcome back and shoulder hair.

When I was a skinny bean pole, it didn't seem to matter to me. Now that I have a rounder shape, shorts are horrible uncomfortable and get folder under my tummy. So for me, bibs only.

Bibs only. They stay in place so I never have to pull em up on or off the bike.
If I were a woman with some hips, shorts could work since they would stay in place. But I am a guy, so thats not an option.

Why would I want to have metal alligator clamps attach to my shorts and deal with thin straps and metal adjustors on the bands? Nah, I will just buy some bibs and use the purpose designed straps that are part of the clothing.
On a related note, I also don't take low tops and sew fabric to them to make hitops.

Only shorts. I own bibs and tuck the useless shoulder straps in the waist band. I should just cut them off.

My hypothesis is that bibs were invented so pro teams could get advertising on the butt, by shortening jerseys and using straps to avoid crack exposure.

i prefer shorts. don’t like the elastic straps of bibs over my chest and shoulders. currently really enjoying the rapha cargo shorts, which have two mesh pockets for little things like keys, a credit card, etc. zero issues with them staying up, absolutely no gap between the bottom of the back of my shirts and the top of the back of the shorts. no comfort issues of any kind on 100+ mile rides.

Bib shorts can exacerbate numbness issues “down there.” Saddles are the main culprit but any padding on saddle or shorts is not ideal for that.

it’s less aero but wearing bib shorts around town/at work without athletic shorts over them is pretty obnoxious. I don’t like being stuck in cycling specific clothing, hence the shirt tied to my bars and flat pedals. Utility cyclist etcetera
