It's been some time since I've had an AW in pieces. Tomorrow's supposed to be a rainy day. Think I know what I'm gonna be doing.

Although not so visible in the photo, the steel near the fork crown has a shiny coppery cast. I wonder if it's corrosion I didn't sand off or a film of the original brazing filler? Anyway, looks neat. Maybe discoloration from the brazing heat?

I picked up a '78 Raleigh Sports last weekend, it came with one new Kenda K103 tire mounted and one loose, marked 37-590, 26x1 3/8"

Here's the mounted one vs. an original on the right. They're not even as wide as most older 27x1 1/4" tires.

Both tires have 55 psi in them on Raleigh Westrick rims.
They look small, and likely won't provide much rim protection.
Time for some Michelins I guess.

Quick observation. I'm sure someone else has noticed it by now - and maybe I noticed this long ago - but it dawned on me that the S3C-equipped models, even those made after 1974, omit the top tube cable guides.

This one (presently on eBay) has been tinkered around with at some point, but I just verified it against some other factory S3C examples, and it checks out.

Seems like a fair amount of effort. Double the frames to stock and warranty if necessary.

-Kurt

P.S.: Love the fact that Raleigh paid proper homage with this color in the catalogs. Humber Blue. Not quite the same as the 1950's stuff, but I'm not going to reject that sort of fanservice either.

Those bikes are really rough looking in the pics. I seem to recall messaging the seller a long time ago and not getting any reply.
I sort of figured there may be enough parts in the whole lot to make one decent bike but none are complete.

Even nice one's don't sell here, I've watched a few really nice examples just sit for months. I picked up a '78 Sports last week that really only needed tires and a basic service and relube. Not hardly a scratch on it an no rust. It was listed for months at $100. The same seller had four bikes listed, I bought all four for $120.
They had been listed all last summer, the seller told me he didn't get a single email, but they were pictured with flat tires and standing in front of a pile of trash and a rusty row of Walmart bikes. The seller was all to glad to 'get rid' of the funny looking English bikes, but wanted $400 each for the Walmart junk.
I really sort of figured I'd get there and there would be nothing but Walmart bikes but I left with two Raleigh Sports, a Robin Hood, and a 50's Schwinn Traveler.

Re: 3 speed prices
1964 Original Owner Schwinn Racer 26” Bike - bicycles - by owner -... (craigslist.org)
I reached out to this seller, complimented their bike, and shared a few pictures of my Racer Deluxe from the same period. I was impressed with the paint, chrome, and the original seat (those black ones didn't seem to survive!) The seller responded and mentioned that they thought that they were asking too much, because there was no interest.
I tried to tactfully confirm that $399 for a pristine Schwinn 3 speed was likely too much, locally. Even with the aftermarket Miller Dyno light kit in gorgeous condition. I suggested relisting for $225, and hoping to get $180+ for it. For the right person, $400 might be right. I have a feeling it'll sit on the market for a while though.

Green one is an S5-equipped, 1967/8 Sprite (pre-27" with the unique "5 speed" logo on the downtube). Very eclectic collection.

Question for you English 3 speed Guru’s. I have the original seat bag for the Sports but both leather straps for closing the top were brittle and broke off.

Is it worth it to get some new straps sewn on or just get a new bag?
