What brand, model, and year of bikes came with a Shimano 105 6-speed group set? I think that would be Shimano's "1050" group set (i.e., indexed downtube shifters, BioPace chain rings, toe clips, etc.)

I'm the most interested in Trek models as they are the most readily available near me, but any brand or model available in the USA is fair game. I've taken up restoring bikes as a hobby and am finding that 105 isn't a much sought-after group set but is still of reasonable quality, making bikes equipped with it somewhat affordable on the used market. The hard part is weeding-out all the used bikes that aren't 105 equipped.

Shimano New 105 (6 speed) would be 1986 or 1987. It was a popular mid-range group. There were many models to choose from. Most manufacturers offered a New 105 model. Some that come immediately to mind are:

In addition, most mail order houses offered framesets from more exclusive brands such as Basso, Guerciotti, Pinarello, Tommasini, etc., with a variety of group options that generally included New 105. However, most consumer would typically pair New 105 with one of the mid-range frames having a Columbus Matrix/Cromor or Reynolds 501 tubeset.

Whoa! Thanks everyone for the input... great stuff! Lots of the bike names are drumming-up memories from when I was 14 years old and bought a 1987 Schwinn Tempo as my first "real" road bike. I remember the Centurion Ironman ad quite well. (I can't remember the names of people I know, but I recall a 1987 bicycle ad. Hmmm.)

My memory works similarly. Every so often, I'll meet someone that I competed against three to five decades ago. Most times, I can't remember their names. Then I astound them by being able to recall the brand and model of bicycle that they rode.

I've loved the ride of the Trek 560, Ironman Expert, and Schwinn Tempo. All of them fast and smooth at everything. (But I always had trouble with the front derailleur needing a trim too often.)

1050 is on the verge of being too modern for my taste, but I'll admit to liking the SLR brake levers. The only non-aero ones, I believe.

Is the 105 group set with the dark finish still the 1050 group set? For example, the 1988 Trek 1200 appears to have had a 105 group set with a "smoke" finish. I'd like to know what other bikes in the 1980s came with this uniquely finished 105 group set.
