CL super score. Ortlieb panniers!

I’ve been eyeing a set of panniers lately, I would prefer the beautiful Berthoud panniers but they are not cheap. I almost bought a set of Ortliebs at the coop for $80, but decided to wait. Well, luckily I check CL way too often and today it payed off. I scored a full set of front and rear panniers with a backpack attachment for $10!!! I think the posting had been up for 10/15 minutes.

The guy didn’t use them anymore and was going to drop them off at the coop but decided to get rid of them to make space in his garage. One of them is missing the anchor hook, which costs nearly as much as I paid, and none of them have the shoulder straps, but I think I’m ok with that.

I have no idea what that is but if you're happy, I'm happy.

Score!

But black makes me shudder. Panniers are the most visible part of a bike by a lot. 1999, I needed new panniers for commuting n Portland. Knew the blue ones I wore out were not helping my traffic survival odds. Learned at Citybikes, a coop I found as soon as I moved here that Ortleibs were the ticket but dark colors were the only option, I said that was a deal breaker, several times. Then an employee told me he'd heard that a shop in Seattle has ordered a special run from Ortleib using their yellow rafting fabric. "Look into it! I want a pair. And I'll tell everyone where I got it." They did. Bought it, told everyone, went to all the shops I knew and showed them off. Now I see them all the time.

Now if I could only get SKS onboard with their road fenders. For those of us who ride the dark, overcast winter country roads like racers have been doing more than a century.

Well, odds are these will mostly see groceries. I’m out in Gresham, so I don’t have to deal with as many terrible drivers that inhabit PDX. The hi-vis panniers are pretty cool. There is really great reflective tape that will probably adorn these bags just in case.

Those light patches on the front and back are super reflective, assuming they haven’t suffered any peeling. In dark room shine a bike light on them to check. Mine are still fine after 12 years of touring and commuting/shopping.

Start searching for the missing part. Ortlieb has changed mounting systems over the years and those bags look old.

I'm not a panniers guy, but a score is a score. Nice!

Great score. I have owned Orlieb panniers since 1994 and I still have my first pair. They are almost indestructible.

While picking up some hardware at the local coop I was able to grab a slightly used ortlieb handle bar bag for $30. Looks like I have a full set of bags for $40.

Jealous! I've been looking for a set of panniers with a backpack attachment for my work commute!
