A friend in our park restores bikes from a certain era, roughly 1880-1920, having to do with the advent of aired tires, I believe.
Some examples of his other work can be found at Time Machines, Ltd. Really amazing stuff!

Anyway, this is his latest project, a 1912 Wonder, almost done. It's the first track bike he's done. He reconditions most components himself, but sends out some stuff to be re-nickeled. He also buys some new stuff, period correct, like the rims and the pedal rubber.

The hub is a New Departure, Model A, one of their first offerings. Due to the peg, he's not sure if it was original to the bike.
The saddle, and this top tube bag, he reconditioned himself. But with saddles in really bad condition he sends them to Chuck Leipham at The Saddle Shop, in Edgewater, FL. Says he's one of the best there is.

The rims he bought from an Amish shop in Ohio.
Wooden tubular rims for $90, clincher rims for $135.
Oh, you want an aluminum insert? Well...that'll be $5 more!
Pretty dang reasonable, I'd say.

The tires can only be found at one spot in the whole country. I forgot to ask the brand name. Most offerings have a stripe on them, which was not period correct.
Speaking of striping, he applied his own on the rims, clamping the rim down and using this jig with a paint pen. The jig even has teflon slides and a chunk of steel for weight.

All in all, it's truly amazing what he is able to do with bikes that are over 100 years old.

Very nice. The TOC bikes are in a world of their own. They are not difficult tow work on unless you are searching for parts. I finished my 1898 Glenwood in less than 6 weeks. Lotsa fun.

Beautiful! First thought - what could Major Taylor do on that bike? Then I looked at that stem. Ouch! (Less than fond memories of hitting my sternum on the UO-8 stem bolt when I was 14. A benign little bolt head compared to that one!)

Bike's a touch small for me but I'd manage just fine. Bet it's a sweet ride! Love those wheels!

Some bikes surpass beautiful and gorgeous.

People who take these bikes/framesets and restore them nicely (and not necessarily 100% NOS original) are what I call phenomenal and historic in the pieces they produce.

Lots of you guys do it.
