'92 Specialized Allez build-up
I'll be using a Shimano 105 5500 group set for this Specialized Allez, Serial # PL 266814
I'm pretty stoked, especially after lacing and truing my first wheel set!

I have a similar, almost identical (but well-worn) Allez waiting in the wings.
Did you perform that lug lining yourself? I like the build quality of the frame but hadn't considered lining like you've done.

Frame paint is original. I had Lowes match and mix me a sample-sized red enamel, and it matched very well.
Bought a yellow paint pen, and lined the lugs myself. A bit tedious, but not too difficult.
Two questions, right off the bat:
1) Will these basic cable kits suffice? I have them already, and need the housing, but wonder whether they will be a good match for my components.
2) My clamp-on FD is too big. Seat tube is 29mm, the closed clamp is 33. Do I shim it, or shop around for the right size? It came with the shim pictured, but it's way too tall, and not even enough thickness. I'm thinking about sawing it in half, which is all I need height-wise, and will double my shim thickness. Unless I can find a shim or spacer without the shoulder.
Bought a yellow paint pen, and lined the lugs myself. A bit tedious, but not too difficult.

Nice!! That should end up being a very fun bike to ride. I love the ride of the Specialized steel frames.

The front derailleur in the photo is marked 1 3/8” or 34.9mm. You need one with a 28.6mm clamp. You could probably come up with a shim, but everything else about your build is so perfect, if it was me I’d scrounge around for the correct front derailleur.

... or the correct shim you’d need to use the derailleur you have on hand is Shimano part number AD17S. Available online for around $7.

Although I'm sure the shim would work, I'll be on the hunt for a 28.6 clamp.
I just like that idea better...

Apparently, Shimano does not make a 28.6 clamp...but a company called Problem Solvers does.
I've ordered it, as well as the shim, and I'll see which one I like better.
Here's a good one; Within a day of starting the build, thinking I was ready, I've ordered Velo rim tape, Shimano shims, and a 28.6 FD clamp. You guys were right...this is not the most cost-efficient method of bike-building.

This 89 Allez is in the work stand as my next tear down project, I am going to leave it stock. Took it for one last ride before the tear down and was reminded how much fun it is to ride. Your 92 is going to be fabulous!

Polished up the Kalloy 50, figuring I may appreciate the 3.5" rise.
The SR 60, with a 2" rise, is probably more appropriate to the era, and I do prefer the hidden bolt.
But...you guys are always saying fit is foremost!
