Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At this point, I'd rather save some pennies and buy a Veritas or Lie-Nielsen. Same with chisels.
I have a couple of nice old Stanley #6, 7 and one not very well setup #8. I use them exclusively for book matched joinery, so anything smaller is not much of regular use, since I already have an 8” standalone planer/jointer and a 13” ridgid planer. Of course that doesn’t stop me from lusting after Lie-Nielsens. .

I’m almost embarrassed to say this, and they do chip if you look at them the wrong way, but I’ve found that Harbor Freight’s $5.99 set of chisels does an ok job if one’s ok with giving them a couple of swipes on the plates every 2-3 cuts. But again, I use them even less than I use the hand planes, so I’m ok with constant re-sharpening.

Bah, the day job hasn’t been leaving any meaningful time to do any guitar building, light wood working any way.

Paul Seller's is a big fan of the chisels that pop up at Aldi once or twice per year for under 10 bucks. I picked up a set and they're workable. The fit and finish sucks, but they'll take a nice edge and hold it pretty well. That said, I bought a nice Veritas 1/2" chisel (my most used size) in PM-V11 - for something that will see the bulk of the work, it was worth it. That reminds me that I have a $100 gift card for Lee Valley from last Christmas... I might put it towards a LA block plane or something...

Got out for a short ride to keep me from getting too stir-crazy, Brutally windy at times and just warm enough to be damp-cold.

One nice thing about the studs - you rarely have to call out your approach/pass.

Indeed. Love longer rides. My few friends that I ride with like 50-70 so I have been riding to/from start for bonus miles. If weather would stay warm I might even consider a double-metric but likely will wait for next year.

I love the long rides, too, but prolly won't sniff even a metric 'til March or April.

I noticed that I had one segment with a top-3 PR today. Wondering how I could have possibly done that, I clicked on the segment... which is when I noticed that the Local Legend has ridden the segment 176 times in the last 90 days. One hundred, seventy freakin' six times. And that's after taking 5 of the last 7 weeks off! Woof.

I looked at his ride history and he seems to be a COVID cyclist, with no rides this year prior to late April. Out of his 74 rides this year, all but 5 are laps around the same little lake that's 2.75 miles around. I ride to stay sane, but that would drive me crazy.

It's got the tread buzz, but not the deep resonance of the large volume tires.

I try to do enough > 3 hr stuff to keep the fat catabolism and gluconeogenesis systems induced and because it’s fun, but my feeling is, especially at my age, long distances at a survivable pace are just training me to ride slow.

What is the risk of damaging the bottom bracket on a plastic crabon bike when replacing bottom brackets?

There’s a used frame I might be interested in, but it comes with a sram dub BB. I’ll have to remove that and put a shimano compatible bottom bracket, and I’m weary of doing something that may damage the frame.

Don't bang on the BB shell with a hammer and you should be fine.

I picked up a nice* wheel set on today's ride, from the 70s, likely. Five speed freewheel. It will go onto the 70s bike I'm giving away next week.
*It's the right age and thus great quality for the price(US$20). There will of course be a good bit of clean-up and an overhaul each. Saves me a trip to the city tomorrow.

I've got enough planes in that range - #4, two #5 (one set up for hogging), #6, #7, low angle jack, low angle smoother.

My block planes are fine, but not great, and I've also been thinking about an adjustable shooting board.

Eh, you see what I ride - for some of us it's ok to get into a groove. Think of what race car drivers do. Especially when that's the only way to get decent routes much of the time.
