Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I believe I have FINALLY solved my skipping chain issue.

I put a new front chainring on (just the 34T and kept the 50T). As best I can tell, it is no longer skipping under load.

The chainring teeth were not visibly worn or "shark-toothed" like I have read they can become, but clearly worn enough to slip a little given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

It works fine in the driveway, will confirm with next road ride but I am pretty sure it's solved.

I estimate that the chainring has something around 25-35k miles on it, which I am guessing might be typical lifespan for an inner chainring.

Just curious about wear, and has nothing to do with your issue, but is the outer ring just as old? Curious if they are wearing at the same rate, or if you are just in the small ring more.

I’m in the large ring 90%, but I know that’s a matter of terrain and you have a lot more hills than we do. I had a total elevation gain of 108’ in 26 miles today. How many hot dogs is that?

That's flatter than a bam ride! Kudos!

datlas does a lot more climbing than you. A lot, a lot. Smaller rings also wear faster because science something or another.

Fewer teeth to bear the force of the chain. I’ve had some badly worn rings, but they never skipped.

As above, smaller ring wears faster. Also when pushing hard (from a stop or standing in hills) I am typically on small ring. That is when it was skipping. Visually, I could not see any obvious wear on the teeth but clearly they were worn “enough.” I have very hilly terrain so typically in the small ring going up, easily half of the time.

Outer ring is same age.

Yeah, fewer teeth and higher chain tension, no?

Yes. Torque is proportional to the radius of the lever arm, which is greater for a smaller ring, so more force.

Or at the bottom, and if you barf it up on the climb that leg doesn't count.

Just sayin' - once I'm past wanting to barf after a hard climb, I could eat a Nathan's hot dog on the descent. I might crash, of course.....

I’m not a healthy eater by any stretch, but I haven’t had a hot dog in probably 10 years. Sounds punishing.

Like the local club racing in Finland. If I remember correctly, no car can be sold for more than 500 euros, and if anyone in the race wants anybody else’s car, the owner cannot say s/he won’t sell..

Thanks to datlas’s chain direction warning, and rjones28’s break-the-connecting-pin tip, replacing the chain went without a hitch. In fact, the hardest part was breaking the old chain.

Todays ride was on a trail that runs along the river. I like going out there when I’m by myself because it’s popular with cyclists, and if you ever need help it’s readily available. The downside is there is no coasting. 😞 But, it’s pretty flat around here anyway. My max hilly ride has been total elevation gain of 1,000 feet in 27 miles, but that takes you to an area that is not very bike friendly.
so you were down by the river? Reminds me of this.

Oddly enough I grilled two today for lunch and one for the Mrs. First hot dog I've had since September or October I'd guess. These were Boar's Head natural casing dogs. Yummy.

So, it's freezing back East, and hot in the Southland, but here, it's Just Right!

Perfect riding weather! I did 50 real world miles, with no tights or legwarmers or baselayers or vest or jacket. And the long sleeved jersey turned out to be too warm! I could have gone with summer kit!

I didn't know how I'd do after the two big Zwift climbing sessions this week, but it felt pretty good! 63% Z1 and Z2, but you have to have SOME fun, so there's about 32% Z3.

Now I need a nap....
