Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

50 and rainy here, so no Real Miles for me. So, I clamped the Bianchi into the Snap, set myself up with two bottle and some snacks, clipped in, and set out in the unreal world, without a plan other than to kill a couple hours. At first I thought I'd just do a Z1-Z2 day, after my Week Of Unreal Climbing. But then I got a burr under my saddle and scored a PR on the Volcano Circuit, then decided to try the Ramp Test in Erg Mode again. This time it worked a lot better - I avoided the death spiral, and got a result 25 watts higher than last time! Then, I was tooling around Watopia for the next 15 minutes, trying to decide whether to do a Workout, or jump to one of the other worlds, when suddenly....

Nothing. Literally nothing, because the TV and my laptop went black, the music stopped, the 'On/Off' switch on the laptop was dark. Total, instantaneous crash with no warning. No frame rate problems, no glitches. Just, black and silent.

Unplugged all the peripherals and restarted the computer, which seemed perfectly fine. Checked 'my.zwift.com' - nothing. No new data since Friday. Checked Strava - same.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it was one of those "Zwift Crashes". Most of an hour's data, lost! The HR data for the Ramp Test, gone!

So I plugged the TV and the Ant Stick back in, restarted Zwift, restarted the music, and went to Innsbruck, figuring to ride in the town while deciding whether to do the climb again, BUT apparently I chose "UCI Short Lap" instead of Innsbruckring, and I figured, "What the hell?" SO I rode it again, having done it as Stage 2 of TdZ. Beat my time up the climb by 2 minutes. Beat my time for the whole lap by 3 1/2 minutes. Whole thing was about an hour, and left me pretty much spent.

Checked "my.zwift.com" again, and the firt hour was there, but only the minimum data - time, distance, elevation, calories. No route, no power data, no HR data. I had to enter what data there were into Strava manually. Better than nothing, I suppose.

I learned last night that Zwift runs locally, on your own computer, and that Zwift sends data on the 100 riders nearest you for your computer to render, so it seems like during the ride, all your data are on your own computer, NOT on Zwift's servers. So if you have a crash, all but the minimum data are gone. Makes me wonder if I need a better rig for Zwifting...............

funny you should say that..

I was working at a diving center back in Turkey for the summer, perhaps 4-5 years after Glasnost where more and more Russian tourists were starting to vacation out of Soviet Republic. Here comes these Soviet divers, along with their diving equipment, including tanks, regulators.

First off, there’s no identifiable first stage to begin with*, and their hoses are, for lack of a better term, thin, clear plastic hose with wire mesh reinforcement instead of the 350bar/5000 psi rated heavy duty hoses we’re used to. Then I check their pressure gauges and the tanks are pressured to 20 Mega Pascals! The tanks they brought were quite thin compared to the steel tanks we were using, so the thought of having them dive in close proximity to us with fully pressured tanks, no first stage regulator, almost garden hose looking thin pressure hosing was quite unnerving.

I know they’ve been diving for years with success, with that kind of equipment/setup for years but still, it was interesting to come across Soviet “technology” when they were just opening up to world.

*For non divers: modern regulator system uses what’s called a 2 stage regulator. First stage is right at the attachment to the tank (full pressure= 200 bars/3000 psi), drops air pressure from the tank roughly 10 times the ambient pressure based on your depth below sea level, the second stage aka the mouthpiece is connected to the first stage via a high pressure hose, drops the pressure to equal the ambient pressure.

Welcome to the new ice age.
High 80s/low 90s(low 30sC) with low humidity, daily. Magnificent weather. There was a light breeze today. I went for a walk. I'm enjoying walking more and more. Planning a morning ride tomorrow. Vamos a ver.

Right, now I have 7 or 8 mm periscope and I think I’ll go at the very least 5 more mms, so if I can’t get to it before riding weather, it will be a horribly offensive periscope

Was reviewing my weekly summaries at intervals. Looks like most of my time is spent in zone 4. My fitness has gone up from 22 to 35. Not sure if I need to change anything.

Meaning nearly all of the time you're on a bike, you're in Z4?

Worst call ever.

Then there was the refs, not calling PI on the Bucs, but calling PI on the Packers.

Keep in mind that this is HR, which is going to lag/smooth quite a bit vs power. You also have the flat, flat terrain and moderately long stretches between traffic controls, so steady efforts are understandable.

As far as your Fitness, just keep riding. Since Fitness is based on a 42 day period, it'll probably continue to rise as you fill out a 42 day history.

One of the gifts that my son received for Christmas was a cookbook with a teeny, tiny baking set. Real baking pans, utensils, mixing/measuring stuff... but tiny. Anyway, over the last couple weeks, he's really gotten in to baking, making things like layer cakes the diameter of a quarter and chocolate chip cookies smaller than a dime (side note: the messes he's made in the kitchen have been decidedly *not* tiny). Today, emboldened by his tiny baking, he asked to bake full-sized chocolate chip cookies with his mom. She told him that they could after little sister's nap time, etc. Well, he got impatient and took it upon himself to get out the ingredients. Then he decided to measure them out while still waiting. And then, why not mix 'em up? By the time my wife showed up, he had balls of cookie dough on the baking sheets, waiting to go in to the pre-heated oven.

And the cookies? Pretty damn good. If this continues, I may have been a little hasty in celebrating my winter austerity.
