Considering that there has never been much love for the "daringly different" flying doorstop and I have wrenched on it many times over the years, here are a couple of shots. I saved it from a ill-reputed small town used car lot in 1993. It has been driven every season since and has accumulated over 100,000km in our care.

The Legnano Frankenbike is alive!! No front brake lever yet and the Japanese components work fabulously but don’t have the long-term mojo I’m after. Weinmann calipers will stay until I unearth the correct Universals. I have some Campy pedals that may or may not go on at a later date. I will slap on a generator/light set up when the right one falls in my lap.


Tubulars!

Coffered cranks will probably go back on. SR cranks are meant to be temporary.

Taillight was a “why not?” buy.

Brooks and visible serial number. I think birth year around 1960.

1 shifter is enough?

Haven't posted anything in this thread for a while, but, sadly, I haven't really built anything. I was feeling this really annoying little tick or knock coming from the right crank or pedal on my grocery getter. This KKT Top Run pedal actually came loose from the arm quite a while ago, which is a first that had never happened to me on any bike. And now this tiny little knock.

It's good to have another component around that you can just swap to narrow the issue. Took a pedal off another bike, put it on there, and that quickly resolved the problem.

So what was wrong with that pedal? There was a tiny bit of play in the bearings, but I often leave that same amount of play in pedals I overhaul. I bit the bullet and overhauled it, removing all the play. The worst part was loosening the super tight nuts that held the clip. But it made it a whole lot easier to overhaul without it on there. Anyway, just took it out for a test ride and ... no knock!

Man, I love a perfectly quiet bike. Silencio!

Finished up the Bianchi Veloce estate acquisition from a couple of months ago. Still need to ride it but I'm liking how it cleaned up - especially because the components had some of the worst crud I have ever had to deal with.








and even some Bianchi celeste bar tape

Back in 2014 I picked up a pair of wheels ($50) that were sitting in the basement of the seller for 15 years after having been built for him to race on. He never used them.

They are Chorus hubed with the rear for a freewheel. The rims are Omega Strada Hardox V. The intent was to use them on the Pinarello Monetllo. The issue was that it was 740x DA drive train. So over time Campagnolo parts replaced the DA with the exception of the wheels. A BF'r sold me the spacers for the DA block and the conversion was nearly complete. I've been running it that way for quite awhile with Ergos that need to be serviced but work great.
In about 2018 a Record rear hub was found for a good price ($30). The spoke length was a direct replacement so the hub was switched.
In about 2012 or so a coworker sold me a SpinDoctor truing stand for a reasonable charge ($25). I've been using it but with this wheel, I have had difficulty finding the center of the wheel! Lasts week a dishing tool was delivered. Yeah a DIY one could have been built but .....

If you have seen pictures of my garage, that wheel has been in the truing stand for about 2 years! Some where along the line an 8V block was purchased new and mounted on the hub. Not Record but Campagnolo lower level. Hey it is Chorus on the bike!

Today I finally trued the wheel to center! I found the the indicator block on the stand is able to move laterally as you rotate between using the centering indicator and the lateral indicator. That was the problem with the center wandering!

Great feeling of closure. Now I need to order a set of tubulars! Vittoria G+ of some model. Probably 23 because the bike might not fit 25's.

Gotta have a pic, right? Rear wheel as plurchaced. Haven't taken one with as is.

1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer

I picked up this remarkably clean '72 Schwinn Sports Tourer with all original parts. I've started overhauling it. Today was a good day. The freewheel came off even though there was no grease on the 50 year old hub shell threads, . The threads on the front axle are a bit buggered up though and that may have to be replaced. I'll likely swap out the pedals but the idea is to keep the bike as original as possible.

I put fatter tires on the Campania Professional, going from 25mm tires to 35mm, 35mm fenders to 45mm. Plenty of room.

Installed a set of new 700c x 25 tires and took it out for a ride around my neighborhood...




Today, after I do my see what I can toss and then find at the dump run, I will (finally) take this one out for its first test ride since I finished restoring it almost a year ago. Truly looking forward to the ride. Hope my old legs can deal with the transmission gearing...

Got this Gitane Team Pro built.

Oddly the frame is all French threaded.

Only hiccup was that the Campagnolo fixed cup was stuck and I couldn't get it out for nothing. I don't think it is coming out without heat and an impact wrench so it stay.

Diamant CX

Also just finished this Diamant CX bike. I loved the Splendor Team bikes of the early 80s and Mr. Softly in Australia makes great decals. My rattle can skills are not great but it came out alright.

It came from Holland and I don't know what the steel is. I think it is Ishiwata. The headtube is JIS and the seatpost is 27. The dropouts are Campy as are the cable guides. I would think that the drops would be Japanese but I am guessing it was built in Belgium this way.

Edit: I emailed EDDY MARTENS and he says that they built it for Diamant and that it was made out of Reynolds 531. I didn’t see any Reynolds marks but I may have removed them when I stripped it.

Pretty cool since he made bikes for the Splendor team.

This was alot of fun and is a great ride.

Lovely bike. The blue Gitanes with the yellow accent from this era is one of my favorites. Very nice component selection as well.

Why odd that this is all French threaded? Should it have a swiss BB? Is that why it wouldn't come out?

This bike came out great. This is a really nice tribute to a different era in cycling.

I'm a big fan of vintage cross bikes as well. They don't show up that often.

They should be English. The cups and headset are both French. That cup is just stuck. There are worse things that could be stuck than a Record cup so not shabby.

Mounted some VO zeppelin fenders to the 1992 Koga-Miyata Traveller. Looks good, but next time I'm going back to Gilles Berthoud.

Honda brake rotor screws, the part everyone loves to hate, finally yielded to a Vessel JIS impact screwdriver. Multiple applications of Liquid Wrench, heat and strikes on another impact screwdriver and they hadn't budged.

Vessel, or as Chekov said on Star Trek,

Today I noticed the Torpado's rear tire was flat, and thanked my stars I was home when I found it. This is the first flat I've had in two or three years (knock wood). So I started out simply patching a tube and ended up rebuilding a freewheel.

The freewheel was just a little sticky. After I squirted some oil in there, it felt a little too gritty. Now it's nice and smooth. This only the second time I've ever overhauled a freewheel, and it went off without a hitch.

Fortunately, I also found the bit of thorn that was still stuck in the tire. It certainly helps to center the tire label over the valve stem, so you can more easily identify the fault in the tire based on the place of puncture in the tube.

Cleaned the hub face before adding copper anti-seize.

New rotor and pads on. I used Permatex ceramic extreme brake grease for the the anti-rattle clips and the ears of the pads. Earlier I had cleaned the caliper slide pins and used 3M silicone paste on the pins. A buddy is going to help me bleed them tomorrow.

Finished work on the Koga-Miyata Graveller.

Bar-ends and custom decals installed and some small bits are ordered, like a Carradice Bagman for saddlebag support.

I'm thinking of ordering the Silca Impero Ultimate frame pump (its custom titanium cousins by 22 Bicycles or Firefly bicycles will have to wait) and might upgrade the good looking but fairly heavy Schwalbe Little Big Ben 40-622 tyres to the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H in the future but not sure if it might spoil the look.

Trying to hit my 10 post minimum so I can show off my 1973 Chiorda “Juventus” all original with manual and instruction booklet. Even have the original multi tool that came with the bike!

Wow, absolutely beautiful! Purple is my color lol... The teal accents look great. I love anything that even vaguely reminds me of early to mid 90's Kawasaki 2stroke dirtbikes lol
