I don't even need to leave home to know I'm getting older and slower. When I get up in the middle of the night to pee, my 16 year old cat gets to the litter box first -- with cats, getting up to pee or going to the kitchen for a snack or drink initiates a group effort of social peeing or social snacking. According to cat/human guesstimates, that's around age 80 for her.

A few years ago, I was doing laps on an ~800' climb- about 7.5%.
On one of the laps, a runner appeared ahead and I thought no problem, I'll catch him,
but he stayed ahead for 2/3 of the hill, and powered on up a trail at the top of the pavement.
A cat 6 race of shame...

First time I realized I was slowing down is when a woman on a mountain bike passed me.
That was 30 years ago, she was a very strong rider.
More recently it was when I couldn't keep up with some kid in spider man jammies

Old enough, hmmm?
There is more enjoyment when it happens at 0 grade on the Rail Trail. On that downhill bit, I showed SWMBO my short video around our hilly test loop. A very pronounced lean going through curves that aren't quite a switchback, but getting close. I'm still looking for the right "Old guys rule" t-shirt.

Does anyone know if a bike has significant efficiency advantages over a runner up a steep (say 8+%) grade?

From what I understand a bike does not have much of an efficiency advantage over a runner up a steep grade. And a runner isn't trying to get his weight and the bike's weight up a hill.

Even a 10 minute mile is 6 mph, which is a normal cycling speed up a hill, so I didn't actually feel that bad-
especially as I was shooting for a 10k day.
At a certain point, the cyclist is just pushing the added weight of the bike uphill vs the runner.

...when I'm riding my recumbent downhill and I get passed by an upright bike.
...when I'm on my road bike and I can't beat my recumbent uphill PRs
...when my choice of bike is determined by what will hurt the least, above all else
But more than anything else, when I look in the mirror.

Last summer there were a couple of cross country skiers on the trail, training on rollerskis with ski poles. I only caught up to them on hills and had to wait for a long hill before I was able to pass them. These dudes were quick on the flat and scary fast on the downhill sections.
Also had some kid blow past me on a onewheel electric roller board (single fat roller in the middle - sort of looks like a balance board) Kid must have been doing well over 20 mph in shorts, tee shirt, no pads, no helmet. Oh to be young and indestructible again!

When I was younger, I was obsessed with my speed, always trying to beat my personal best. Now I’m content logging miles / minutes on the bike to maintain fitness.

You know you're old when you *let* them pass you to give them a head start.
Then you forget that they are well ahead of you and never speed up to catch them.

When you get a massive tail wind and you pedal your guts out on your local hill and find out on Strava you are the 6,182nd fastest.

In my early 30s I was always in the top 5 during hill climbs with my local cycling club. Took a couple of years off the bike to return in my late 30s and road with a LBS Tuesday night fun ride. My clock was so well cleaned on the hills by some 20 year olds and pacelines at 25-26 MPH that I had to ditch those rides. Boy did I feel old.

Years ago, before I started cycling, I had a regular running route through a nearby state park. I was running along a trail when a woman ran up behind me, and as she passed, she said "How far are you going today?" I answered "Nine miles." She said "I'm going eleven" as she zipped on past me."
I knew I was slowing down before I started cycling.

Not to worry you'll get used to the younger guys doing it. By the time you get to 50 it will get worse, by the time you get to 60 you won't be worrying about it.
Good ride on the Okanagan Rail Trail (ORT) today. Only got passed by a chick on an e-bike and a guy on a road bike. The chick was going at a steady 28 klicks and I wasn't trying to keep up since there were another 40 klicks ahead.
