Add Glitter to Sealant in Tubeless?

Rumor has it that adding a small package of glitter helps seal punctures much more quickly with less loss of air pressure, similar to blood clotting, than without. Has anyone tried adding and if so what was your take? Cons against adding besides additional mess? Or just buy heavy duty Orange sealant and don’t worry about it.

This is NOT intended as a discussion of tubes vs tubeless so please don’t go there.

I'm sure it would work great, as you said it's basically what Orange Seal does.

I've seen youtube videos suggesting it does work (clog faster, clog bigger punctures). Downside is it can clog the valve too. Like a "race day" sealant.

Glitter is a fairly considerable source of microplastics in the environment. Gotta be something better than glitter....

Glitter is the VD of the crafting world, please don't bring VD to the biking world.

Is there some problem with the sealant you're using? Why do you feel a need to add glitter?

Glitter is evil stuff; it ends up in the waterways (everything ends up in the waterways) and acts like a tiny lure to the small animals, who eat it and starve to death and/or it works its way up the food chain. The ground walnut shells sounds much better.

People have tried all kinds of things. IIRC, glitter causes boogers. Slime has rubber crumbs. Stan’s has or used to have corn meal. There’s a guy over on the MTBR forum who uses dryer lint and dog hair, which sort of satisfies the “I was going to throw it away anyhow“ criteria.

This thread has been going for 12 years and a few thousand posts, making it kind of troublesome to get through it all, but you can get the gist from the last page. If you want to see all the things that people have thought of or tried, go ahead and page through it all

https://forums.mtbr.com/29er-compone...406115-22.html

The old standard recipe used latex mold builder, cornmeal, and RV antifreeze. Ammonia is used for an inhibitor of the latex coagulation. That’s not what industry uses, but the stuff that industry uses is not already under your sink. Lately, they’ve been using slime from Walmart, which gets you the chunks and the antifreeze together.

It would be an interesting experiment to see how long it takes before everyone in your town has a little glitter on them.

Environmentally glitter is out. Glitter? We don’t need no stinkin’ glitter. Dog/cat hair makes great sense and can be found around the house but unseating the tire and reseating won’t be great fun. Or go with the extreme Orange variety.

LOL...could be....My wife is a prolific crafter.....I think her cash outlay on crafting over the time we have been married, 35 years, is 10 times the amount I have spent on biking. She used to have glitter, however, she has opted out of the glitter items.

I use corn meal in my homebrew sealant. It settles in the bottle. Shaking necessary before filling into tire.

wow that is quite the thread. Lots of mad chemists.

Is the slime from Wallymart any different than what’s in the LBS? Is it for vehicles or especially for bikes? The Quadboss ATV sealant sounded promising too.

Glitter is an STD. Once it is inside a space--it never fully leaves. Similar but even more obnoxious than confetti.
