Frustrating Day

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frustrating Day

Brought my Fondriest to sunny Calif (54*) to get in some dry miles. Headed out to do 30 miles and two miles into it, just avoided a bunch of glass. Because I had a one mile fast descent coming up I stopped and check the tires just in case, which I never do, but since I am 600 miles from home....

checked the back tire, which I checked before leaving found a chunk missing with cord showing through. Turned around and rode the two miles back. All the local bike shops are closed today. Just griping but hate missing a nice day. Tomorrow is another day. Snow forecast at home tomorrow. Poor baby.

A nice day is still a nice day, isn't it? Even better not to be bandaged with road rash from a nasty downhill blow-out. Time to order some nice tires... get in a walk..

Right .... you didn't ride but you didn't spend the next two weeks wishing you could ride but you had a collarbone screwed in place.

Funny you said that. I got in a nice 4 mile walk through a nearby state park. Loved it. Great minds.....

I would of just made sure I had a tire boot and spare tube and carried on with a bit more caution on the high speed stuff.
Rear tire blow out isn't that bad as long as you aren't leaned over hard in a fast turn.

That should never happen in the smug but mellow state of CA. Even with those Seattle tires that cost $89 each.

That's good Rick, I hope California will show you some nicer roads soon.
Speaking of tires, I love those light GP4000's but a little deeper into winter I'll be putting on GP 4-Seasons on the rear.

That's one reason that I always have a spare tire along.

Well a day riding in sunny CA (even if shortened), beats a day in the dentist chair! Unless you're a dentist of course. Enjoy!

I feel your pain... Last time this happened to me, I was going for my longest - and fastest - ride ever (you know, these days where you wake up extra confident and you feel like you're a pro riding the TDF as soon as you hit the saddle?). Fortunately for me, LBSs were opened. I finished the rider afterwards, but I had lost the momentum.

Did not know you even had Fondriests in the US. I used to live one town over from him. I rent bikes from his shop when I am in the area. Last one I rented was an amazing TF2.

Is that a leather saddle?

Yes they do exist in the U.S. Saw a bio-pic of Lance Armstrong (yes, that guy) and he was shown with this model. Mine didn’t come with performance enhancing anything other than bladed spokes.

Mooo !
That is a beauty. It looks like you opted for a heavy-duty Gatorskin on the rear. But it appears only 1/4" clearance to the seat tube?
It looks like a 56-57cm? You probably don't like it. You're probably ready to sell it cheap, just to get rid of it. PM me and I'll try to help out.

Just put new Conti 5000s on it. What an improvement. The price just went up $200. Has a nice Cinelli (sp) bar and full Campi Chorus. Thinking about those too, it went up another $200.

Frustrating Day Part 2

After suffering much pain for the last 4 months in the scapula area, with actual popping noises when I move my arms, I self diagnosed with

Scapulothoracic Bursitis. This means staying off the bike for a few months, anti inflammatories and P.T. to strengthen neck and shoulders without aggravating the condition.

Apparently after a long hiatus from riding and then doing multi-hour rides, I overwhelmed my neck and back muscles. Should have eased into it.

Every dollar spent on the bike will get you more than ten miles of good riding.
Sorry to hear about the shoulder injuries! Bummer. Well, if you have to lay off riding, this is the season to do it.

Welcome and sorry to hear that you made a trip here just to run into multiple issues. Do make me appreciate living in Southern California more, where we can ride year round in decent weather.
