Change (dimes, quarters etc) shortages near you?

I was in our local Ralphs (big chain supermarket) and for the last 2 weeks they are not able to make chainge and if you don't have exact change they ask if they can put it on your Ralphs card. There's a little sign on their change dispenser saying "Due to a change shortage... blah, blah". Are any of you seeing this anywhere?

Nope, no issues with change at any place I shop. I was in the supermarket on Sunday (Stater Bros) and no problem using cash/coins as payment. Went into a sandwich shop on Saturday for lunch and similar.

FWIW: Most folks seem to be paying with debit or credit cards these days, even a few of those 'over-the-phone' systems (apple pay? or ???).

I use dimes and nickels that collect in my truck to by a fountain drink. They like that it replenishes the small coins for the clerk.

The "coin shortage" sounds like last year's "toilet paper shortage." Panicky people do dumb things and reinforce it through misguided social media hysteria. I'd point to a recent example but it would risk getting political. It's just an example of panicky people with a bad case of bias confirmation misunderstanding or mis-hearing something on the news, posting it to social media, and suddenly there are thousands of people who think the entire US supply of toilet paper and quarters are being detained in Gitmo.

I don't even keep quarters for the apartment complex laundry, since there's a much better laundromat down the street that uses pass cards.

I might have a few dollars in mixed coins in a jar, but that's mostly for a forgetful neighbor who runs short of cash at the end of the month, or for panhandlers. I've probably used coins more as makeshift screwdrivers than as money the past few years.

The only place I use change is at Aldi's for use of their shopping cart, and it is returned upon completion of shopping. Don't pay for anything, anywhere with cash, let alone coins.
The local casino has a sign posted encouraging people to bring in coins for cash; don't know why since none of table games or slots accept or pay off in coins.

Same here. I was wondering why it seems like Ralphs is the only place experiencing this shortage.

Just to get you in the door no doubt... works every time. Free food, free booze, spare change... whatever works.

I save my quarters to use in the local laundromat industrial washing machines for sleeping bags. Otherwise, the change goes into a big bowl and occasionally to a change sorter.

I have not seen any shortages around here... but then I tend to pay with a CC... and when I use cash, coins often end up in tip jars.

Perhaps Ralphs was having a shortage that day only, as "someone" didn't get to the bank on time... it happens.

My father used to take the bus from Philadelphia to Atlantic City to visit his sister in Atlantic City. The R/T fare in the 70's was $10 and ran day and night, all the passengers were given $15 dollar worth of quarters upon arrival in AC. My father than walked one block away from the casinos to where his sister lived and never set foot in a casino in his life.

Haven't noticed any shortage here....If i don’t use my debit card (I rarely don’t use it because of it’s no fees, cash back and reimbursement of any ATM fees) and when using cash if I have coins in change i just leave them on the counter for someone else….

I can't remember the last time I used cash. I have 5 singles in my wallet that have been there at least a month.

My coins accumulate in a jar until I put them in rolls and bank them. I try to pay with exact change to prevent coin accumulation.
