Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am thinking of re-reading Catch-22. I read it way back in 2000 when I started my long tour from Seattle to Cortez, CO. I can still envision when I busted out laughing at a campground in Rexford, MT when I got to the end. A couple of people looked over at me like "What is his deal?" Definitely one of my favorite reads ever.

I ordered my free tests. I expect they'll be here by the time our peak in on the downward trend. I have them for next variant, at least.

A big part of this issue is that most buildings were built before the advent of things like HEPA filters. Also, having operable windows are usually less efficient as automated HVAC systems that are designed to operate efficiently from an energy consumption point of view will "fight" with the open window/doors unless the HVAC system and operable windows are designed and manufactured to work together (new stuff that is spendy). And, in schools and public buildings, operable windows present a security risk.

As for the public health agencies, the current environment baffles me. It's really sad that there is so much lack of trust in those agencies.

We did too and fine. Most of us will need them. The issue is the lack of coordinated effort. For instance, you test positive and isolate, but who is gathering the data for your community and helping you and your neighbors to use the info to make the decisions which reduce or balance risk across the society? Public health policy is not something we can push to the individual level and hope to open schools safely.

That stuff costs money?

It would be progress if we got 80%+ of the population to merely internalize that the virus is bad and should be avoided.

A HEPA filter is a disposable device which can be fitted to any air handling system and it doesn’t even have to be HEPA. MERV grades still help a lot and you can make an effective air cleaning device out of a box van and a filter.

I completely understand the lack of popularity trust in the agencies, especially the CDC, whose comms have been simply textbook bad.

Less money than we are losing in economic damage and healthcare outlays.

That may help on a residential level, but is not going to get you far in a large public building. Schools, courthouses, public office buildings, and the like would require substantial and very expensive retrofitting to get you very far.

The cubic money thrown at the schools in regard to addressing this, is astounding. Accountability is non-existent, and no one cares.

The head of the CDC has been on my hit list from the beginning. I'm certain I've mentioned that in another life.

The big swing.... You can go back to work in 5 days. The message there became very clear.

Thanks. I was on a 4-5 roll for a bit. I become unsure of myself when I see a word such as the solution today, but at least I was able to pull the trigger this time.

One problem is that most of the lay public don't get that you change the rules as your understanding evolves, as you learn more. So you have people saying, "But you said 2 years ago we didn't need masks!" And they also want to see things as binary - you "get COVID" or you don't - so that if you can still "get COVID" after vaccination, then vaccination doesn't work, even if you're 1) 10 times less likely to be hospitalized and 2) 20 times less likely to die.

This inability to grasp the simplest concepts of probability keeps casinos a profitable business. Well, for MOST people, that is.

That would be a good idea. The million dollar question though is where is the money coming from?

I own a public building, but I'm not dropping the coin to upgrade filtration in the HVAC system, install operable windows, or do anything else to improve the ventilation/filtration. If I did, I would never recover the capital cost, and it would actually cause me to lose money on the property for a long time. My tenants are not going to just write me a check to do it.

Not to P&R, but if you think area officials would even spend $$ for universal masks, much less any of that other stuff, .
