These people should be pummeled and their bike taken away.

Saddlebags are uncommon in the groups I’m in, they are not fashionable on 10k$ bikes

If you don't have anything to help, what can you seriously provide them when you stop? I mean, I understand the sentiment, but it is sort of like handing someone out of gas and empty gas can.

people appreciate it when someone stops to help and I really don’t care if I have to slow down to ask. Maybe they are actually stranded and need a cell phone, or maybe they are just having a rough time with a flat that keeps coming back and want some moral support.

If you can’t / don’t know how to change a tube, then carrying one would be kind of pointless, I suppose. (But better have an alternate way to get yourself home)

But if you know you might need something and don’t bring it, because “People will want to help me because they like me;” then you’re either narcissistic or exceedingly naive.

flaps in the wind like the spokes on the rear wheel. I hope your bike shop finally fixed those.

I always have a saddle bag. Where else am I going to store the provisions I need. The jersey, gold and extra ammo have to go somewhere.

If i stop to help someone on the side of the road, they better have something to show they're trying to be self sufficient. So they need a tube. They better have some of the tools to make the repair or no tube from me. They better get that thumb out and get to walking.

Some mountain roads in SoCal you better be entirely self-sufficient and have bailout plans that do not include phone service.
I have gone as far as bringing two spare tubes, patch kits, pump and Co2, a used spare tire, boots and switching to SPD if I have to walk long distances because no phone service is available. That does not include the usual multitool, spoke wrench, zip ties, and chain tool with spare links.

So to Larry, I can only offer if you ride within walking distance, sure do not carry anything.
If you are isolated, a 20 mile bike hike might sway your thinking.

Where I ride, I rarely see another rider, so I carry the whole kit in a fanny-pack.
In regards to helping a downed rider in need of parts or labor, I am more than
happy to oblige. It is about the camaraderie, after all. Different styles for different
miles. Are you too selfish to throw another rider a tube? I don't get it.

This. I have made a few friends this way. But they were people who had been reasonably well-prepared and just had streaks of bad luck on their rides.

If this comment was directed at me, let me explain. I'll do anything I can to help another rider.........as long as they're putting out an effort to help themselves. But, if I come upon a rider with no tools/provisions to repair a mechanical themselves, relying on others to help them instead, they better get to walking. You have to learn that lesson somehow. Kids are the exception.

When my first child was around a year old, I locked my keys in the car 3 miles from my house. My wife and son were at home sick. I call up my wife and ask if she could bring me the spare set. She says no and tells me to start walking. She also says to walk fast because it's starting to rain. It did, and I did. I got the spare set and made the trek back and unlocked the car. Then I went to the hardware store and got another key made and a magnetic box to hide it on the vehicle. My son is 19 now. When I get different vehicles, I do the same thing. I have to use the spare in the box 2 or 3 times a year. Used one last week 75 mies from home. Since that first call, I've never had to call someone else for help. I learned my lesson.

Selfish?

Too selfish? Maybe. I am willing to stop and help a stranger with minor mechanical problems that can be fixed with the few tools I carry. Even help them install a new tube (theirs!) and use the mini-pump I carry to fill up the tire. It stops when it comes to giving them the tube I may have carried for months without needing it, My spare 700C tube weighs 97 grams (3.3 ounces) so hardly is a weight problem. You can get small bags that hang beneath the seat, large enough to carry a spare tube and two tire irons. No need to have a rack and saddlebags. The mini-pump weighs 70 grams, about 3 ounces. I don't have much sympathy for anyone who chooses to be completely unprepared.

So......it is ok to call someone a moocher? Foolish, selfish and irresponsible? Antisocial? Obnoxious? Idiot? Arm chair mental diagnosis thrown out.

For not having a saddle bag with tools?

My $120K German car does not have a jack, spare tire, or tools. I don't have AAA.

You know this is nothing like the OP’s situation, right?

Anyway, are you really expecting random people to fix flats on this car for you?

If you can afford a $ 120K car then you can afford to call a tow truck and pay extra towing bills....No need for AAA or any spares or tools.

Not selfish but I just refuse to allow moochers to take advantage of my generosity.....and I expect other riders to carry their own tubes and pumps for emergencies just like I carry tubes and pumps for emergencies.
