Now I don’t feel nearly as bad wearing a tight jersey, because it’s never been that tight.

Have a number of garden variety jerseys which fit fine but are not tight fitting and don’t flap. A form-fitting jersey arrived three days ago which felt tight, but not ridiculously - like a skin suit. After I started riding the jersey felt more like a warm hug - maybe like a thunder-shirt for a dog. Thought I would hate it, but actually enjoyed the way it felt. No doubt will get another.

I actually was trying on the L and XL versions of the ride jersey at a ride once. I asked the hot blonde working the table which one I should get.
She said, "Get the XL, it makes you look like less of a sausage."

I got the XL, picked my ego/dignity off the floor, and walked out.

Too tight is when I no longer choose to wear a jersey. This is partly an unconscious decision in and of itself. If a year has gone by and I've passed over a jersey for the duration of that year, then it's given away or sold.

The same applies to any garment, actually. If not worn in a year (all four seasons, for example), there's no longer a need for that garment. Simple.

If it zips, it's not too tight.

Personally, a big fan od Castelli trisuits and road suits which I can basically just zip up, but once I'm in it, don't notice I'm wearing anything. Supremely comfortable, wicking couldn't be better, and pretty aero since everything is snug. Italian size S, so if there is anything extra, it shows. Would look better with a few kilos less.

If your belly button makes a clearly visible hollow area under the shirt, then the shirt is too tight.

As above, hair poking through is another good sign.

Probably use the same fit standards you have for summer time jerseys.

Though I'm with with those that say if it zips it fits. Assuming it don't split.

If one questions "too tight," then it's probably too tight. Of course, too tight is relative to the model. Who am I looking at? John Candy or Eye Candy?

if you're uncomfortable, it's too tight. That's not really hard.
