Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The worst is when it's someone you have known for decades and they bust out the conspiracy theories. When someone you love picks the theories over facts and reason it's a hard pill to swallow.

My burning question of the day, at least in my mind, is whether my R7000 11-speed cassette will fit on the hub that my Sora 9-speed cassette occupies.

I find answers both ways, and I know that the best way to know is to take off the Sora cassette and try the other, and I'm working towards that.

Plan is to change the Sirrus to my 105 drive train that I took off the Domane.

Oh, it's fair if it's there - I'm just saying some took countermeasures. Just like dating, I'm glad I don't have to deal with the new version of the world (at least for now).

Amen, bruv!

If my wife were to leave me or if something happened to her, I'm not sure that I'd ever want to date anyone.

I certainly could never be anyone's employee again.

I grew up in a house where my parents didn’t discuss politics. My mom would never tell me who she voted for. If I asked she would say none of my buisness. My dad was easier to figure out due to hobbies and such. My point is, I miss the days where people kept politics to themselves.

I’ll have captains bring up politics day one, leg one of a trip. It amazes me, what happens if I don’t agree? We’re stuck together for 4 days.

I’m sure there is a cyclistdating app out there. Or you could just get weird and strava stalk.

I found it very unpleasant to discover that my niece went anti-vax. My sister, her Mom, thinks it was the influence of the guy she was living with, but really - years ago, she adopted an Ethiopian orphan who's HIV positive, but has been kept healthy since then (I think he's now a senior in high school) with antiretroviral drugs, developed by some of the same people who were urging us to get vaccinated. And not only has she travelled a lot and so been subject to vaccine requirements, but she had 6 kids (two of her own plus 4 adoptees) who all had to get vaxed to go to school etc. And then decided she'd rather listen to a Personal Trainer than the uncle who'd worked in the Biopharma Biz for 40 years, including in vaccine development.

My family was the opposite. We talked politics all the time. We even argued politics a lot, which is strange because we ran a very limited gamut from liberal to socialist.

But I've always been careful not to discuss politics or religion at work, because of exactly what you describe. I do discuss politics with one or two coworkers, but mostly because we agree on most things.

Yeah, that would be a hard conversation to start without coming across creepy, wouldn't it?

Too late. Strava reset everyone's privacy settings to "private" for flyby about a year or two ago. No more stalking. Before then, you could have actually done that.

Oh, yeah! When I pointed out that I'd worked a lot of my career in things like HIV, she responded, "But you didn't cure it, did you?"

I confess I responded by asking her how SHE'D go about curing it, but stopped short of saying, "I'm sure your extensive experience (checks notes) selling used cars would give you great insight into the problem."

And a damn good thing, too. IIRC, there was a thread back then asking if there was a non-creepy way to introduce yourself to a woman you'd seen on Fly-by. IIRC, the consensus was, "No."

Political discussions with clients is strictly verboten in my world. Don't want to risk losing any business.

I grew up in a very Dem family, in fact, my mom was a Dem election judge when I first voted. My dad was union labor all his life, so you can deduce where that put him. Imagine my mom's (and my dad's) shock and dismay when I voted in the R primary at age 18. They were not really liberals though as they grew up in a fairly bigotted community.

My wife was a social worker when we got married and pretty liberal. Her parents were bit Rs who often referred to my wife as the family socialist. Later in life they were staunchly R when their economic need and the relief they got pretty much squared them with D financial policies.

Now, many years later, I seem to find myself straddling the middle somehow.

I had a moment Saturday which was pretty awkward. I was riding with friends and we encountered a woman I knew from a different club. They had never met her. I said hello and she said I looked familiar but she wasn't sure. I guess I really don't know her but I've been on rides with her and I reminded her of that.

It didn't feel like I was being creepy but it was a little weird. Hope the next time I see her we can have a laugh about it.

It is weird how much this TV's power consumption varies. Netflix HDR? Torching at 450 with modern eco mode for Drive to Survive. Ditto for HDR Disney+. Hulu and NFL+ are 260-280. Broadcast and SDR gaming are 200. Outer Range on Amazon? 150. It's a dim show but nothing else has been nearly that low.

Love this thing though. I keep thinking I see uniformity issues only to realize it's a bit of reflection on a dim spot.

At my age, I'm not even sure where I'd start, although my familial longevity compared to the shorter lifespans of American men should eventually work in my favor.
