Coming Clean
I bag on people who are riding expensive bikes slower than I am riding my bike because.....
I'm jealous.
Step up, the rest of you. I'm guessing that I'm not alone in this behavior, and really anybody riding a bike is ok by me.

Expensive bicycles do nothing for me. Nothing. I get all excited about mine when it's new. That lasts 90 days. After that it's road grime, duct tape and blood on my handlebars. Other people's bikes are as exciting to me as a Yankees license plate frame (I'm a Mets fan).
The Mets beat the Yanks in Mordor tonight 2-0. I can't wait til this dopey hammerfest in the AM is over so I can get back, munch down on pizza and watch the Metsies do it all over again.
What the hell was this thread about? Oh, right, jealousy of other people's bike schwag. I jonz for Porsches and Ferraris, not Colnagos and Sevens.

Well... I don't bag on anyone for riding a given bike. Half the time I don't even know what brand people ride, and rarely what model.
One of my main training partners has had a SystemSix for three years, and I had no clue. I knew it was a Cannondale. I didn't learn it was a SystemSix until he was hit by a car and totalled it. I've put this bike on top of my car many times and still paid no attention.
I'm much more jealous of the guys who can attack when I'm w/in 3 beats of MHR.
I have a "nice" bike, but it's 7 years old. Who cares? I kick ass on it, and get my ass kicked on it. All I want is a new right brifter and a power meter.

A few weeks ago, I was cranking along at what I thought was a pretty good pace. A very fit looking guy on a mountain bike blew by me like I was standing still. I was jealous of his guads.

My bike is definitely faster than I am. That's ok though, because the way I see it, when I'm going up those hills, I need all the help I can get.

There's a guy that rides around my neighborhood on a blacked out Cervelo, top of the line components all around, in full CSC kit. Half the time, he's got his pink Giro winner jersey on. He averages about 14 mph +/-, and he'll stop at the local boat ramp and sit on his bike, just showing off his general appearance. I love blowing by him; it just gives me a very warm feeling inside. Off topic, but pro team kits in general just sort of bug me, especially tour winner's jerseys. I would feel the same if someone showed up to baseball practice in full New York Yankees gear.

I let him have his fun. I haven't done anything to interfere with his riding, nor have I ever indicated to him in any way how I feel. I've just got my own opinion. Once I start imposing that on someone else, I feel you have justification to respond like that. Until then, why can't you just let me have my opinion?
And as far as Dr. Pete is concerned, I never said that passing this guy makes me feel tough. I completely understand that riding over 14mph isn't a big deal. We've all got our pathetic ways (jumping to conclusions and calling someone out on an internet forum being one of them), and so you keep feeling better about yourself for critiquing my comment, and I'll keep feeling better about myself for passing a guy riding on $10,000.

I'll second that. Riding my bike gives me an inner peace that no other activity has ever provided. Yes I enjoy having nice bikes, this, for me adds to the experience. Still I know I could be out on dumpster fixie and still have a great ride.

It isn't how expensive the bike is that gets to me. What gets to me is that some folks will buy the wrong bike for the type of riding that they do. Usually it is an all-out, super stiff, twitchy race bike whose primary function is leisurely century rides. I just don't understand that. There are plenty of "bling" options for a nice and comfortable century ride bike if part of the fun is to show off your possessions. Why wasn't that choice made?

I bag on the guy in my neighborhood who put mtn bike tires on a Merckx frame, complete with flat pedals so he can wear sandals. The only reason I paid him any attention was that he was riding diagonally across an intersection during rush hour causing traffic to screech to a halt. Oh, he had a flat bar on it and the saddle is one of those huge couch-like things you see on a beach cruiser. The frame had the same paint scheme as the 7-11 bikes. The horror...
