Found Eddy Merckx bike at the dump

Found Eddy Merckx bike at dump
I found an Eddy Merckx bike at the dump this past weekend. It's a touring bike that says Fabricated in France on the seat tube. It has quite a few braze-ons. It also has fenders, a light with generator and drop bars. The deraileurs are Simplex with shifters on the down tube but attached with a clamp,no braze-ons. The decals are exactly like this MX Leader at cbike.com. What do you think I have? Is it an actual Merckx or just a french made frame with his name on it?

I can't tell online. You'll have to lend it to me for a few years and I will be able to give you a definitive answer. If it is a Merckx, that is an incredible find.

I would imagine its a generic French bike with Eddy's name on it. There were
alot of "dept store" type bikes produced in france that were branded with
famous cyclists names, i.e. J. Anquetil, Louison Bobet and a few others.
From the description of the bike alone its difficult to say for sure tho.
Older bikes did not always have braze on shifter bosses, even some of the
top end bikes. The decals, etc. on the cbike linked above are a copy of
the Molteni team bike, I'd say you've got a copy of that.

There is a circa 1950's Bianchi Specialissima in the San Marcos dump. My brother took it there when he was cleaning out my parents garage...I won my first bike race on it 1979, with Faliero Masi watching. John-Paul Simoniti was our club president.
He took it there 12 yrs. ago, said he didn't know I would want it.

Well, I stripped down the bike. Everything but the bb bracket and cranks is out. I plan to use it as a fixed gear bike. I live near Boston and Harris Cyclery seems to have everything I would need to get this bike upand running. I also have many parts lieing around. I have a Dura Ace brake set from around 92 and a 90 Crankset and bb. So it shouldn't cost too much to set it up.

Interesting that a post started today on Classic Rendezvous concerning
a shop in Germany which has one of Eddy's bikes (yes the real deal),
its a Colnago, Molteni team bike.
If you note the picture its remarkably like the bike from Cbikes
(well that was a repro of the Molteni bike). Your bike
doesn't have the cloverleaf logo on the fork, or BB cutout does it?
If so you may have a genuine Molteni frame, far from the generic dept store
bike I was originally talking about.

Mine doesn't have the clover leaf on it anywhere but I'm pretty sure it's not a racing frame. It has a braze-on on the left seat stay for a generator and little rings under the down tube for the wire from the generator to run thru as it goes from generator to the light on the front fender. The lugs are pretty heavy duty looking too. The fork is chrome with a flat fork crown.

So I havd emailed Merckx and asked if earlier Merckx bike were made in France. The reply was "NOT AT ALL". So that means I either have a chepie fram that someone slapped decals on or it actually is a Merckx. Hmph.....

Also, the sticker right under the seat on the seat tube is blue,white and red. It says, "STARNORD" and under that it says "FABRICATION FRANCAISE".

I have one. There's plenty of info out there in Google Land, but they were made in 1975 by Starnord for Merckx.

It's not legal here to take things from the dump. I guess you could flag down a car going to the dump & ask to see something if you saw it heaped up in the back or something.
