another SPD power meter idea - Favero Duo Shi + Shimano trekking pedal body
I am maybe not the first person to notice this. I certainly have not been everywhere on the Internet looking. I'm going to try it. I already have the pedals, but not the Favero axles. The $$ is a self-reward for something I haven't accomplished yet. If anyone tries it before me please share in the comments.
Favero lately introduced the Duo Shi pedal axles, designed to work with road pedals. Specifically, PD-R8000, PD-R7000, PD-6800, PD-R550 and PD-R540. Sadly, they say, they won't work with mountain bike pedals. Which is true!
Kind of.
The pedals axles aren't just axles. They replace the axle assembly, which includes all the inner and outer moving parts, and threads into the pedal body.
This replaces the similar part in the Shimano pedal, and in the process also increases the q factor by about 10 mm per side. (oh well) PD-R550 shown:
This doesn't work in a MTB pedal (PD-M####) because they have shorter axles. Note the shorter barrel section on the inboard side of the threaded insert.
So that's a non starter.
But guess what... there are some SPD pedals that use the longer axles. They are not MTB pedals. They are trekking pedals. They are SPD compatible but not the same - they are "Click'r" with a overall a lighter floatier attachment, and bulkier cages. But your MTB shoes will click into them happily without modification.
Here is PD-T400. This uses exactly the same lock bolt (Y43Z13100 & 4100) as the R550 pedal.
I hope this works. I want it to work.

I'm clicking around looking for which bodies this might work on. I have not clicked through all the mountain pedals first but looking for ones that use the same insert. The compatibility map on the left side of each exploded view part list is a clue. PD-M530 is a candidate. None of them seem to have exactly the same axle assembly, which would make it a sure thing. But that difference can be material or finish and I don't know if it would be determinant

So after a lot of time wasting research here is my candidate list. None of them from a current high MTB group. All trekking, urban, non-group or otherwise oddball. I also identified another SPD-SL pedal, RS500, not listed by Favero but essentially same as R540 and R550. I looked at a few platform pedals but they mostly have longer axles. There's no EV yet for the new Saint/XT pedal to check, but seems unlikely at first glance.
m520 spd with no cage
m530 spd with low cage
ed500 spd light action with low cage
me700 spd with low cage
t400 spd click'r with bulky cage (Trekking LX)
mt50 spd click'r with big plastic platform with molded pins
m424 spd with grippy oval cage
m647 spd with grippy oval cage (DX-R)
t420 spd click'r/flat big plastic platform, smooth (Trekking LX)
t421 spd click'r/flat big plastic platform, smooth (Trekking LX)
a530 spd / flat alloy body
eh500 spd light action/flat, much like a530 plus pins

I have a pair of T400's and a really old pair of something I think is older than M520's.
M520's are a good candidate to try since nearly everyone who has thought "I should try clipless pedals" starts there.

There is a huge thread on the Trainerroad forum about converting. Assioma to non Shimano SPD pedals.
Even a few attempts at flat pedals.
Many successes of what works and what doesn't.

Yes. So far as I could tell they were all about the Assioma pedals. This idea is specific to the new Duo Shi axle assemblies. Thread title should have said Favero, the company name, sorry about that. Have done some edits.

Interesting idea. I know that Shimano's new power meter pedals can be converted between 3 types of pedal types by doing what you described. I could theoretically see doing this going from my Gravel bike (summer) to my velodrome bike (winter), but realistically I just use SPDs for everything. Can't say I lost any races because I don't have road pedals, its more of a motor problem in my case. ;-)

I really, really wanted to. But life right then went into a mode where I needed money for kids and bills more than for supplementary bike toys. Emerging now but have not revisited. Needed to bring my MTB back up to code first
