Alivio SL-M3100-L vs Altus SL-M2010-L

Crankset: Altus FC-M2000, 22 x 30 x 40, bought
Front derailleur: Altus FD-M2000, 3-speed, bought
8-speed chain
7-speed cassette, with future upgrade to 9-speed

Shifters: Alivio SL-M3100-L and Altus SL-M2010-L are at the same price.
Which shifter should I buy? Why?

generally, alivio has always been consider a step up from the altus line. however, these days i can't see much difference other than the name. are you running 8 speed or 9?

x2^
I've preferred the looks of Alivio, but both would get the job done.

well, i asked because you bought an 8 speed chain whereas a 9 speed chain is what you need IF 9 speed is what you're moving towards. and, just make sure the shifters you get are for 9 speed

Bike came with 7-speed cassette, 8-speed chain, 44 tooth chainring.
First step was to upgrade crankset. Done.
Next step: add FD and shifter
Last step: upgrade to 9-speed rear cassette, RD, shifter and chain.

After Covid tires, wheels, fork, etc

thanks for reiterating. okay...but you may still need to get a 9spd chain for things to work perfectly. i've never tried to use an 8spd chain on a 9spd set up/cassette. theoretically it could work, but may be troublesome

8 speed chain compatible with 7 speed cassette.

I would get the Alivio shifter if they are the same price. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples, though - perhaps the Alivio is only a rear shifter, or maybe the Altus is a shifter/brake lever combo.

totally aware of that. perhaps my confusion is stemming from his choice of new shifters. both are 9spd. however, they're only front shifters (neither are integrated w/brake). so, maybe he's only looking to replace the front and retain the rear shifters (7spd) for the time being

Ordered the Alivio shifter.

Thank you for the responses.

Added: downloaded the exploded view and the two shifters are almost identical. Differ only in the indicator unit. Same with derailleurs. Looks like altus, acero and alivio are converging.
