All the new innovations coming out, bikes looked cooler than today, lots of new small American businesses making boutique aftermarket stuff. I would spend hours in shops filled with anodized parts just browsing and drooling. Kooka cranks, Grafton canti's, all of the Ringle stuff, cool looking fork braces and canti hangers and chain tensioners and seatpost clamps, ect, ect.
Now everything is generic flat black stuff from China.

It's funny to see what they are getting right and wrong at this stage. The rear suspension market is now totally dominated by various four-bar linkages, with some kind of rocker to control the leverage at the shock which usually has an air spring. Elastomers are pretty much gone, coil springs are still available but not all bikes can use them. As suspension has improved, the amount of travel perceived as normal has increased a lot.
High pivot bikes come around again from time to time. When travel got longer, the kickback was too much but the rearward axle path was good, so the next idea was to put an idler gear by the pivot. This year's brand having a go is Devinci. My impression is that this is a bridge too far for too little gain in the 21st century market and it will remain rare or premium.

Here's an old (2006!) MTBR post by a guy who tore down one of those Scott bikes. The bottom pivot is concentric with the bottom bracket and just rides steel on steel. Pretty much all current bikes have bearings or at least bushings at all pivots
