Conti GP 4000S - any comparable but cheaper tire options?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Conti GP 4000S - any comparable but cheaper tire options?

so, i know that the GP 4000S is by and large considered a really good all around tire option. i just dont want to spend the money on them. i know...i know...tires are a good place to spend for a great product...blah...blah...blah. i've got a low budget and 3 kids under 5 years old, so give me a break with the "just spend money on the GPs" comments.

now that we have that out of the way, is there a comparable tire that is cheaper without giving up too much in the way of performance? mainly i dont want to give up a good rolling resistance.

i'm thinking of going with the Michelin Lithium 2. any thoughts on those?

thanks for the help, 41.

Conti tires have not been good to me, and the GP4K for what it is does not work as well for what it costs me. My main concern is cuts and punctures, so I roll with a Michelin slick and tire liners. No weight weenie here.

YMMV.

If you're not in a rush for the tires, do some shopping online and try to find the lowest price. One of my buddies scored some 4000s tires for $35 each. I recently got a set of michelin pro 4's for $37 each when they went on sale on a vendor's website. I just favorited the link and kept checking randomly. The price keeps fluctuating but when I saw that they were $37 I jumped on them right away. You just have to do the same thing if you want to get a good deal.

The lithion 2 is a good tire, mine last a long time and I weigh 225#. I'm not saying they are better than GP4K's at all, just saying they are a good tire. This is where I get mine, you can get 23's or 25's at $57 for the set https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-x-Michelin...item3382e64714

pro bike kit has a great online selection and prices go down the more you buy i believe, 5-10% depending on if you buy 2 or 4 tires

Get some Vredestein Tri Comps they are better tires and can be had on eBay for &
$80 a pair. I get 3500 miles on them they ride well and are light but have good puncture resistance.

The thing is, GP4000Ses can be had for $80/ pair online from the UK websites. Are you looking to spend less than that? If not, then just get the Contis.

I run the regular Conti GP(Same Black Chili compound, 180 vs 330tpi, Poly vs Vectran protection,$50 vs $70 locally) with good luck. I get over 4500 miles out of them. They can also be had for a lot less overseas.

In that case, I'd stretch your budget by a couple bucks and get the Michelin Pro4 Endurance.

You can get them on ebay for around 85 a pair shipped from the US.

They'd get to you by friday more than likely.

Can anyone else weigh in on these? A guy in the cycling club swears by them. I know very little about them. I see they are a bit less expensive than the Contis.

edit: I was looking at different Vredesteins. The Tri Comps seem to be more expensive than the GP 4000's. I still would like to know more about the Vredesteins.

I just bought a set of the gp4000s from planet cyclery for $74.95 shipped...i had a $5 off code from when i bought my pedals from them this winter. I got the 25c since im about 180#, and usually the $80 sale is on 23s. Also, when i ordered from them last time, i think i ordered one night, lets say monday evening...after midnight im sure knowing my habits, and had them thursday. That is what drew me back to them for the tires.

I think thru PBK it was gonna be $80, about the same, but the shipping time would be a huge difference...i noticed my tired were down to the threads, so i needed a faster option.

Planet cyclery FTW

I picked up a pair (23mm) from PBK and got them for 66 shipped. they are 75 each at my LBS

so if you have the time to wait for a deal then go for it. if not, then it all depends on your budget.

I used the Tri Comp SLick, which is their top clincher tyre for a while. Very very grippy, but tended to get cut up a bit, so I went back to GP400s.

Rubinos are very good for the price and last a long time, they however do not ride as nice the GP4000s.

By all accounts the Lithion.2 are an excellent training tyre although I've never ridden them myself. I picked up some Michelin Pro 3 Race Service Course at 2 for £30, which is a pretty decent price. First impressions are the ride is great: better than GP4000s and Schwalbe Ultremo 23s, but I don't not expect them to be anywhere near as durable as the GP4000s I have on my winter bike, which appear to have plenty of life left at 4k+ miles. The Ultremos on the other hand are done by around 1500 miles.
