Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I want to change the cranks anyway (crank arms too long). Suggestions welcome. Tempted to just go Ultegra 6800 and be done with it. Yep need to get some tubes with shorter valves so the extenders don't stick out so far. Those have removable cores though and have sealant in the tubes so I might run them for a while. However - no excuses in the Hot or Not thread.

5800 or 6800 would be my choice. It depends on whether you want black or dark gray. 5800 is hard to beat for $86.

Maybe an FSA Powerbox if you are interested in getting a power meter at the same time.

^ 10/10 for paint
^ 0/10 for skinwall/gumwall

It's hot, until you start looking at it. Stem, seatpost and saddle match each other, but don't match the bike. Red pedals look good, but not on that bike, they don't match anything. Valves not at the 6 o'clock position. Good garage door backdrop, makes the bike pop, but also makes things that don't match pop out more.

5/10.

Actually, the way things don't "match" actually works. The frame is its own thing and makes the boldest statement, but its look doesn't stray where it doesn't belong. The tires are their own thing, as are the pedals. The stem, seatpost, saddle and cages make for another little ensemble. Nothing is forced, but everything sort of gets along. It's nice. More sweet than hot.
Nice paint job, @prankster.

Yes. I'm not a big fan of the Gulf racing colours in general, but this bike just works. Some little detail on the down tube might make it even better, but it would also be easy to overdo it.

Interesting use of negative space in the composition of the photo. Lot more than I would use but you followed the rule of thirds well.

Orange/blue coloring is interesting and remarkable that yo did it yourself. For some reason I really like the Ultegra cranks and how it works with that dark grey color. You might have just convinced me of the cranks I'm going to get next.

Only thing I don't care for is the gum wall tires. For me they distract a little I think.

Hot.

SP and Stem needs to be painted/coordinated to match.
i get the black-white theme going on but doesnt mesh with the frame.
curved fork is meh but what can be done now.
RD cable housing needs trimming.

4 for result + 2 for effort = 6/10

Nice work. The only two things I question are, the saddle position and the excess cabling for the RD. Have you tried shorting the RD cable? It might give you a quicker shift if you did. Oh, and I do not care for gumwall tires, but that's just me.

Be gentle!!
Thrown together quickly with available parts, and the saddle isn't a match but oh-so-comfortable that I had to keep it for now.
Painted by me, so I put in 3 photos to give you a better idea what I was shooting for (Gibson Les Paul 'Tobacco Burst' color).
Apologies for the dreadful photos.

Nice frame, but a disgusting steer stack height. And with the amount of seatpost showing, it leads me to believe that this frame may be too small for you? Try some better wheels if you can, it's such a nice frame to see those on it.

Have to agree. Frame looks beautiful, but way too much seat post and stack. And 105 on a V1-R is just wrong.

Thanks for the kind words and critics. The paint job was a pain in the butt. Especially the black line. I don't have steady hands like those pros that use thin brushes. Masking tapes and spray paints all the way.

To address some of the critics. Saddle and seat post position are based on my fit done by my LBS. A big supporter on short crank length (165mm, my inseam is 30in) and more forward position.

RD cabling is based on my exp in cx racing. I had a shorter cabling before. When it got dirty especially on the cable stop, the shifting got harder due to dirt getting into the housing and smaller curve radius. Sometimes it didn't respond to my shifting inputs. With a more generous curve, it has been performing better. If you google cx bikes, e.g. Jeremy Powers' bike, you'll see that this setup is very common in cx racing.

The tires are kenda kwest commuter. They aren't cotton side walls. They colored it. I have a separate set of tubular wheels for racing only.

This. I have 175mm on my bike now because I hated the OEM's on the bike and got a deal on them. Feels like I'm turning boxes. I much prefer 170's (6' w/32" inseam) which I'll probably change to in the next month or so.

wicked paint job. no comment on groupset stratification as aesthetics transcends price.

too much spacers and the bars are a bit off (from this viewing angle)... still lands at 9.5/10 and a round of applause

Thanks for the kind words!
For clarification, I traded some services for the frame, and used parts that I had on hand (from another bike) to build this one up.
I agree with everyone about the spacers, they will be dealt with.
Angle of photo makes the seat post look like it's a million miles up, but actually it well within the "gauge" on the back, and it fits me very nicely (long legs/short arms freak). Angle also makes the bars appear stupidly larger than the bike.
Can't believe no one has slammed me on the tires yet

Kudos for the Gulf livery homage though. I love it. Especially of you're racing.
