There is a very nice campground on Highway 1 north of Malibu called Sycamore Canyon. It is in Point Mugu state park. They have a hiker/biker site and showers. This page provides a bit more information.

If you don't mind going south, San Clemente State Beach makes a good overnight stop halfway from L.A. to San Diego. The train station is close by if you prefer to make it an overnighter and take the Amtrak back to L.A. It also has a hiker/biker site and showers. More mellow vibe than nearby Doheney or San Onofre.
There's been talk about closing down some CA campgrounds because of budget cutbacks, so I'd check first before heading out.
PS--A few miles south of San Clemente is Camp Pendleton, which is great for biking. And you get to take your photo standing next to a tank!
(I should mention that north of Sycamore Canyon is the Pt. Mugu Navy base, and you can take a pic next to a jet fighter.)

If you go inland to Ojai, there are some nice campgrounds up in the mountains.
Enjoy!

I'd stay away from the stuff in around the city. Most of the coastal stuff is okay though. Lock you bike and don't leave your stuff unattended.
