Raleigh with 3 speed hub/derailure combo ?

I was walking in old town Ft. Collins ,Colorado and in the window of a buisness was a great looking , black Raleigh, early 70's I think, Brooks, lights, frame mounted battery tube, rear dyno hub, but it also had a derailure type gearing in addition too the 3 speed hub. Looked factory. It wasnt for sale,

any info on this ?? Sweet bike. I'll take my camera next time

Were the gears on the crank, or the wheel? I know someone posted an article from the 50's that mentioned dual chainring conversions were popular for SA-equipped bikes, and both SA and SRAM have sold IGHs with freewheel bodies.

Raleigh sold a bike called a "Lenton Sports Convertible" for a while; it was listed in the 1962 catalog, and I had one from '63. It had an AW hub with two cogs (16T and 19T), cyclo benelux derailleur and a downtube shifter. That's the only Raleigh with this arrangment that I know of that came from the factory like this, and it only came in green; so that's probably not what you saw.

It's a prett nice arrangement, though. You can put two cogs on any Sturmey Archer hub, just dish them away from each other and lose the spacer(s). The cogs are typically 3T apart, so 21T/24T or the like, which splits the jumps between the hub gears.

A bunch of BF-ers have done this conversion with a 3-speed Cyclo cogset and a reliable derailler. The Huret Svelto was popular as it could run the wider chains that the Cyclo cluster required. I did it on my Raleigh Grand Sports with a SunTour Vx:

I didn't run it that way for long as I didn't find a great advantage for my regular commute to have a bunch more gears.

The gears were on the wheel. I'll have to get back up there again and take a closer look

How does that attach to the hub?

Cyclo Benelux offered a 2 and 3 speed conversion for SA hubs and these came with a Mk 7 pull chain derailleur and a top tube shifter... other derailleurs could also handle the wider 1/8 chain and work better.

This kit was sold for many years and one can also do a dual drive conversion using 3/32 Shimano cogs which will fill the space that was occupied by the 1/8 SA cog and spacers.

My commuter runs an AG 3 speed with a dual drive... as the bike is not an old Raleigh but a more modern bike it was set up for 3/32 chain and is quite a nice set up as the 18/20 in the rear provides a nice half step gearing.

Can you point me to some threads or pics of this setup? I doing some work on a 3-speed right now, and a dual drive setup would be ideal for where I ride it.

Here is an extensive thread on this:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...esting-machine

FWIW - I tried this and a freewheel but never could get enough chain wrap with my derailer to make it work properly without the chain skipping. When you add a derailer and external gears to a 3 speed it kind of the defeats the purpose.

That 3-gear cluster attaches the same way as a single gear--it fits over the splined driver and is held on with a snap ring. You do need to have the longer axle (6 1/4" vs. 5 3/4"), however.

On the contrary - You could have closely-spaced cogs for half-step gearing, or go wide and have duplicate gears, shifting only when you needed a bail-out gear or a spin gear.

hearda Rohloff ??

.. In 1980, on a kids' cycle tour of 4 days, I saw someone had a bike with SA 3 speed hub, 5-sprocket cluster, 2 chainrings, making for 30 ratios, although there'd have been a lot of (near)duplication.

There's this bike on the Sheldon Brown site that has 63 ratios, 7x3x3. Awesome.

Gears Shmears, it's the cool & vintage factor, that's want caught your eye and promted this post. But ya, the 1/2 step gearing on a AW hub makes it awfully nice.
