Well met, folks! From South Jersey.
Well met, good folks. I'm from Southern NJ and haven't been on a bike since about... 1984 I think. I rode a ton as a kid, growing up in the 70's and early 80's. I still remember my Team Murray X20FS FreeStyle bike and my home made quarter pipe... the broken bones and the bent rims
Anyway... I have recently found myself on the tail end of a 25 year marriage which is rocking my core as it comes to an end
I have an immediate need to shed almost everything and cling to the bare necessities of life, in order to survive so I can be a part of the life of the greatest person I've ever known... my 9 year old son. As part of my "shedding", I am losing my vehicle in just 2 weeks. I am buying a very cheap, big box cruiser for the time being. I know the quality, I've read hours and hours of forums and reviews, but it's where I am at the moment. It'll likely be a Kent High Tide, or some similar fixed gear cruiser that I can add a rack and saddle bags to, possibly a basket as well, as this will be my only transportation.
So I was scared out of my mind and thinking I was screwed, and then I started talking myself down from the tree.... I work 3 blocks away from my new apartment. I could bike it even in very bad weather I am sure. I'm not sure how I will get my son around as he doesn't ride his bike yet, he's had no interest until now but is beginning to show some interest in learning how to ride now that his old man has no choice. And then I found forums like this one, and articles about car-free living. Then I read about Portland and realized there's this entire movement that I was not aware of! And now I am stoked I'm way out of shape, way overweight and it's going to be a rough new beginning... but I am stoked for the adventure, the eventual progression into a better bike and possibly even a fat tire or mountain bike on the side so I can trail blaze once again
All of my down just started looking up due to what I am reading here... and I am happy and proud to be a part of this. Thanks for having me!

Seems you are on the mend. I hope you find some peace and things go well as you transition into a new reality. Best of luck.
