Got balled out for riding my bike

Both your 86 and 88 have 126 rear spacing. Doesn't take much to move it to the required 130 spacing for 9 and 10 speeds. Some riders will cold set, I never saw the need. I have one 88 with original 7 speed. Built for triathlons. My other 88 has 9 speed ultegra built for bike club rides. The 88 all have unicrown forks making it look cheaper than the 86 you have . But twas the style at the time and possibly cheaper to manufacture. However other than the department store look of the forks my 88 is the most responsive of my CIMs.

Rain? There is much worse carp that can end up on a bike. A good rinse from a ride in the rain does more good than harm once winter comes around.
I had almost the opposite happen. Years ago I had a mountain bike that I rode almost everywhere and a Peugeot that mostly hung in the garage. Well, the MTB needed some work one day so I took the Peugeot. At the train station a woman stopped me and said that if I ever wanted to sell my bike, her husband would surely be interested.
That was the first inclination I had that anyone would give a carp about an old road bike.
There are bikes I wouldn't subject to road salt, but I wouldn't own a bike that I was afraid to ride in the rain.

Unless its going to rust out and breakdown too quickly in the rain then I don't get the beef.
I see guys on Cervelos that can barely handle the road all the time.
I've been too downtown Boston and have seen Girls ride "commuter bikes" that I'd kill to have for my training ride. (Yes I think its attractive when a woman knows a bike hehe)
I've also seen very athletic.. extremely well build dudes climbing uphills on boat anchors sweating it out going "damn imagine if he had the proper bike"
I don't understand what's the deal

Bikes are for riding, not looking at.

We have a few steep "hills', but for sure no mountains. I add wind, heat, and humidity to a hilly ride though and I am spent! Hey, I'm living at about 20 feet above sea level, ride to work and cross a creek at about 7 feet above, and arrive at work at about 35 feet above. So that's a lot of elevation change right?

Heading up your way to try out some of those hills, but will first be preparing by riding the Sierra-Cascades ACA route from Joshua Tree north I want to experience what you all call mountains.

Got my Coffee Bucks Grande Owe It To Myself Capo on a usual morning commute and sat down at a table outside to enjoy the drizz of this Portland morning. A guy walks up and says "Why do you ride such a nice old bike in the rain are you nuts?" I replied that its a great bike for it so I don't ruin my carbon EVO or Six13 Cannondales riding them in the rain. He replies that those bikes are nothing compared to this bike [Dave Scott Ironman Centurion with 7 speed Shimano 600/105] he was quit adamant about it so I nodded and began sipping on my chino again and watched the rain. I think I heard him utter "humph" and walked away. Ever had someone give you carp for riding your commuter in the elements?

Most that has happened to me is when I ride up to the security gate on the base they look at my ID and then say something like "you do know its raining?" or "you do know its 20 degrees out" both of which I always reply "Nope I didn't know that."

A driver beeped his horn at me when I was legally crossing an interstation. He wanted to go right and I was in his way. speed was under 5 MPH.
Next time I will stop in front of his car and ask if I can help him!

The Drive Side is Within
A backhanded compliment, probably intended to be understood in an ironic context... this is the Pacific Northwest, correct?
