Buy a digital caliper ....( Harbor Freight )

Inexpensive ....easy to use ....accurate

Just remember to 'zero' it prior to taking a measurement

I'd measure. Raleigh was famous for grabbing what was on hand when the spec item was out of stock. That the 10 people you surveyed all reported "X" diameter seatpost and tube for your year and model Raleigh does not mean that is what you have. (Raleigh also often made runs of a model for particular distributors with different equipment, etc.

Just to be clear, you pulled out a scuffed 26.2mm post but the largest measurement reading is 26.1mm? Sounds like You’ve likely got a pinched seat tube, I’d look to hone or ream this.

So, lots of good news in the seat post department! To start, I had a 25.6 with aluminum can shim to start. When I pulled it and started to try and make it close to right I could not get a 26.2 in at all without excessive force, ie rubber mallet. I took the advice of a member, oneclick, and found a socket that measured 26.08 by my calipers. I was able to slowly work it in by tapping then removing repeatedly. I thread a long bolt and washer through it to have something to hold when taking it out. After some careful work I was able to reshape hole enough to start working a 26.2 seatpost in. The seat tube lug was definitely misshapened. There were also a few burrs on the edges of the binder slot and weep hole where top tube joins. with work I was able to get a well lubed 26.2 seatpost to slide in!! As a caveat my 26.08 socket rattled significantly more 3 inch down the tube, so I'm saying 26.4 is correct, but 26.2 is going to work. Look no shim!!!

The tool

Interesting technique. 26.2mm ought to work much better than the aluminum can shim method that a previous owner tried. If you end up getting any slippage you can always get a proper seat tube reaming tool and get it 26.4mm, but what you did will probably work fine.

My 21" 1973 Super Course has a 26.6 seat post, likely reamed to that size.
They also nipped the points off the head tube's Capella lugs for Heron clearance.

The Tiger was kitted with an under sized post. Visually, seatlug cut was pinched good, 25.8 was a no go. I wedged the lug open ever so gently with a plastic shim tapped in behind parallel to the seatube till the cut line opened. At that point I massaged a steel 26.2 post. If I was using an alloy post I would have run a rounded file over the spots inside the tube, that are sharp or high, that could scratch the alloy.

This was me trying the 26.2 before the wedge. I couldn't lip that in for nothing. Now it's set at an appropriate height for the size frame.

Mr66, massage is the right word. I spent a while opening mine up, trying not to be to heavy handed. Also didn't let the gorilla tighten the binder bolt when done!

Original 531 decal only had a few shreds left, just enough bits to I.D. Replaced with one from Cyclomondo, who I used for my Stella, several Motobecanes and others. Greg Softley is great to work with, although in Australia, quick to respond. All the other decals are in pretty good shape. Don
