Sharing a bike with my wife -- adjustable seat height / seat post adapter?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sharing a bike with my wife -- adjustable seat height / seat post adapter?

I live in Manhattan and I am in the process of buying a new bike and I would love for my wife to be able to ride it.

Him: 6'1" usually rides a 57cm
Her: 5'5"

We are getting an urban bike, something like a BMC AC01 Alpenchallenge.

I was thinking we could get a M or L size in the bike, and I thought we could use an adapter to have an adjustable seat height. One of those quick release gizmos. Would this work? Given we live in Manhattan we absolutely cannot have two bikes, so I truly need a do-it-all bike.

One or both of you will have a bike that is completely the wrong size.

I vote no, even splitting the difference on size would be too small for one and too big for the other

If you get rid of the wife you should have enough room to own two bikes. Its all about priorities, mate.

What kind of riding are you planning?

Many MTBs have a very long seat post and a QR for easy adjustment. You could mark your desired setting.

For short distances, I've ridden just about any size of bike including test rides on kid's bikes. You just have to make sure you get a bike that fits your wife, perhaps a bit on the long size, but she will limit minimum seat adjustment and top tube size.

The Bike Friday Haul-a-Day is one of the most adjustable bikes, in which the seat can be raised or lowered, and the frame can be lengthened or shortened.
