I finally found something to change on the Robust, as a result of the test rides of the past few days: I moved the saddle back a couple of millimeters.
I managed to get in a few miles before sundown to enjoy the improvement. Much better.
Anyway, about the ride: I had already noticed these driving past them earlier, but got a closer look today. Kind of cool, but also kind of not. I do feel a bit sorry for the Motobecane Prestige:

My first outside ride since (checks Strava) January 12. Hied myself yup to Tower Road, about 15 miles. It felt good to get out, even if it was slushy and a bit hair raising in spots. Rode my Super Sport with hand-me-down Nokian studded tires. Man oh man, do those slow you down!

Some really nice weather this weekend got to take a couple of short but nice rides. On Saturday I took the old Jeunet rat bike for a a ride to the Library to volunteer at the book garage.
Today I got to take short ride on the back roads around Fairplay snow packed roads but nice weather in the mid 40's and sunny.

I finally got out of the Central Valley for the first time since I retired last month and spent a few days with my wife at the coast. Although riding wasn't the main focus of the trip, I did squeeze in a ride through the "5 Cities" of Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Oceano, Pismo Beach and Shell Beach to Avila Beach and back.
Avila Beach, where Jens Voigt won a stage of The Tour of California in 2013.
On the way back, I passed at least a dozen law enforcement vehicles at the entrance to a secluded beach. If you look above the stem just above the mountains, the black spot is a CHP helicopter hovering offshore. I learned later they were searching for and later arrested someone who had cut off their ankle monitor and had fled Sacramento.

Turtles and Skunks
In the part of coastal California where I live this is the skunk time of year. There are dead striped skunks all over the roads. These nocturnal creatures are out looking for their true love so they can continue the family line this coming spring. Their flight response isn't very good. Generally no one messes with a skunk so they have very little fear of anything, including those giant metal creatures with bright headlights.
Some thoughtful skunk lovers post these signs every year to remind us to be on the alert for our aromatic neighbors.
On yesterday's ride I did not run over any skunks! I did, however, encounter an entire armada of Western Pond Turtles hauled out on a sunny log at one of my favorite mid-ride lunch stops.
Along the way I stopped to visit a long-abandoned lime kiln hidden in the undergrowth at the bottom of a gulley.
All in all a fine ride.

Did my usual weekend meander around London, starting with a gentle roll following the flow of the Thames, trying not to laugh at the river cops in their toy boat.....
I just found out today the Art Deco building behind the police boat, the Oxo Tower, which was originally a power station for the Royal Mail, and in the 1920's was purchased by a company that manufactured a popular beef stock known as Oxo. As part of the redevelopment the new owners wanted to build a tower blazoned with illuminated signs for their product, but skyline advertising along the Southbank was banned at the time, and permission for the advertisements was refused. The new owners workaround was to design the tower so all 4 sides had 3 sets of vertically aligned windows, that just so happened to be in the shape of OXO, which you can just about make out on the tower itself. It has now been in situ for 100 years unofficially advertising the popular beef stock, which is also still around today.
I then cycled up through the business district which is lovely and quiet and therefore great for cycling at the weekend. Here's Leadenhall market, one of London's oldest markets dating back to the 14th century. The current version dates from the late 1800's and even empty looks rather splendid with its brickwork and maroon and green paint work, and the glass roof lets in plenty of light and protects shoppers from our crap weather, which the Romans moaned about when they first got here 2000 years ago, and we've been moaning about ever since
To be fair it was quite cold but at least it was dry and sunny today. Here's a typical London scene of old alongside new, with the building nicknamed the Walkie Talkie rising above the old streets below, like a rampant plant on a mission to steal as much of the daytime sunshine as possible. When the building was unveiled our unglamorous weather concealed its dark secret for a while, but on rare sunny and hot days there were increasing reports of it acting like a death ray and dazzling people and melting things in the street below. I then looped back and into central London, stopping for a flapjack under the watchful gaze of Anthony Gormley's 'room' at the Beaumont Hotel. I took that photo from the upper deck of Brown Hart Gardens in Mayfair, which currently has an art installation by artist Yuri Suzuki called 'Sonic Bloom' which is about creating new connections in a post lockdown world. https://www.onofficemagazine.com/des...pandemic-world
I then cycled on through Hyde Park and stopped for a pic of the Serpentine and some little fluffy clouds....
...and finally I cycled home via Leake Street tunnel, where there is a new piece lampooning our Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has spent weeks getting dragged over the coals for lying about a number of illegal parties that he and his staff had during lockdown.
Another fine mess he's got himself into, I bet he now wishes he'd held those parties in Gormley's windowless room at the Beaumont

What a pleasure to be on smooth pavement - free of grit, potholes, cracks/grooves and CARS!
Dry day, full overcast, low 40s, damp trail. 24 mi to just stretch the legs and ride a sprintly red 531c Falcon.
The good news is that the eagles have returned. No pics as they were in distant trees, but at least a dozen.

First time in about a week that it has been warm enough to ride about 30 degrees and sunny. A for a few days got some highs in the single digits and 20 below lows so a lot of ice and snow on the dirt roads which are completely frozen. So only a short hour or so ride on the back roads and part of the bike trail.

Beautiful day for a bike ride in Portland. Took the Basso I’ve been building for a maiden voyage.
After 15 lovely riverside miles, I realized that the Italian bb was unthreading itself. I had about five miles of climbing to get home, during which I didn’t want to think about destroying the bb shell, so I called for a rescue chopper and waited in this parking lot.

Rode about 23 miles to Index from Goldbar. Rode with my Dad(@Roger M). It was the nicest day (weather wise) this year.

Just a quick ride up the local hill. Still sorting out a new build. Rides great. A lot more cable housing around those handlebars than I’m used to. Yikes! Gotta move the seat back.
