Masi Gran Criterium - road ready
This is a Masi that popped up in my CL last summer at a too good to resist price. Seller told me his brother in law bought it some time around 1980 in San Diego. It came equipped with a mish mash of parts, including the Sachs New Success shifters and RD I have in the sales thread. Ideally I want to have a faithful to the bike Super Record group mounted. The stable is getting pretty crowded so my ‘82 Colnago Super was chosen as a parts donor and the frame/fork are now back in the capable hands of the BF’er who sold it to me several years ago. One reason the Super wasn’t getting a lot of ride time is the traditional gearing which is getting harder and harder to muscle over all the hills around me, so I decided to put a compact crank on the Masi from the get go. I immediately ran into chain wrap problems with the SR RD, so digging through my RD box I came up with the Suntour triple pulley and a Campy Racing Triple. Which to choose? Campy faithfulness or a more age appropriate Suntour? I went with the Suntour. Hopefully, I’ll get more riding in this year, beef up my legs, and maybe get the 53-42 crank back on there.

There is some corrosion around the frame, particularly along the top tube, which I mostly chose to leave as is. The fork had a lot of scrapes and damaged paint so I decided to repaint it, finding a close, but not perfect match with some hardware store rattle can (antique bronze). The fork itself is interesting in that it is recessed brake nut whereas the rear brake is nutted. The bike came with a Campy Record nutted rear brake, I assume original, still on the bike, and a Shimano front brake which I replaced with a Campy from the Colnago. That makes me think the front fork was replaced somewhere along the way, although I don’t see anything on the frame that looks like crash damage. I also haven’t seen this dark gray color on other Masi, making me wonder if it was repainted when the fork was replaced. Only stamp on the BB is a size 57.

Wheels are a set I built a couple of years ago and used on the Colnago. I picked up a very nice modern Royce 28h high flange front hub in a bunch of parts, scored a pair of NOS MA40 rims and then spent quite a bit of time looking for a matching rear hub, in this case a 28h Record high flange.
Disregard the Colnago bar plugs. Haven’t gotten around to replacing those yet!

The lack of a serial number (maybe a faint size stamp somewhere?) suggests post Carlsbad subcontractor.
One possible tell would be a squared off facing of the headtube, most visible if one could wedge a bit of paper between the lower had lug and the headset.
Italian and Carlsbad bikes all had a slight chamfered seat that nested completely to the headset.
The frame looks older than '81 and the fork after, '81-83 prior to the move to Henry James sourced lugs.
28's... so modern.
I have seen about this color before, but not very often at all.

I like it. I have a 1976 and did the same sort of changes to make it more workable in the hills. You're going to have a fun time with it, enjoy!

If I read that post correctly and the fork is rattle-canned, that is a very good match. Nice job, as I could not tell a difference even after I read that. Admittedly, I did not really attempt to, but that says something for how close it is.

I still cannot see a difference, but trust that you might in person, if you could move it around in the light. This reminds me of a frame that sold on Ebay a couple months ago. I had a long day and fell asleep maybe 20 minutes before the auction was set to end, thinking the alarm before it ended would wake me up in time to bid. That clearly did not happen and it went for pretty cheap.

With only a size stamp, a good candidate as a Keith Lippy subcontracted frame.
He made good frames.
he also used pre-raked blades, but as most most likely this is a later replacement fork, that is the best guess here. Accounts for the brake attachment variation too.
the headlugs, should have the lip - the later redesigned HJ sourced units did not- other changes too.
