Schwinn High Sierra Appreciation
I just picked up what i believe to be a 1987. It is basically just a frameset and will need a wheelset. I am thinking of going 9sp with it and a bit of a touring build. The front fork has braze-ons for a 6mm. I hope to put a porteur rack on the front and i have a "racktime" rear rack for it. I believe these are made by ortlieb. I also plan on full fenders. First order of business is getting a wheelset. Ill probably head over to Velomine if i cant find anything locally.
Anyway....who cares...
I just think these things are great. Tons of mounts and very versitile for bike packing/camping, around towners, commuting, touring etc etc.
Lets see yours and what you have done with it.

I agree with you- these bikes are so cool. The fillet brazed head tube, the named Schwinn badge, the lugged unicrown fork- absolutely effing cool. Then you get into the braze ons, bottles, rear rack, front rack and mid fork eyelets... and a pump peg on the back of the seat tube for crying out loud!!! This was an ATB if ever there was one.
The big drawback to the 87s is being stuck with either roller cams or U Brakes. I think he roller cams are awfully cool- but cantilevers are more my style. Baby.
The stock wheels were pretty cool- but I got these awesome Suntour XC hubs laced to some mystery rims- serious quality wheels.

Mine is just a regular Sierra, so it's welded instead of brazed, and it doesn't have all the extra doo-dads, but it still rides nice. And, it's Black Chrome.

21" '87. I absolutely love this bike. Handling is spot on with no load to a moderate load, but still good with a full load. Estimated 90-100 lbs (cargo and bike) as shown. Just a little bit laterally flexy with thus much weight front and rear. 650b x 47 tires (Roller cam pads will come up far enough for 650b rims without modification). 18" chainstays with the rear all the way back in the dropouts, 44 1/4" wheelbase.
