I'm not much of a group rider, but so many here are.

Tell us about those big dates you are planning.

If I could make one it would be Cino Heroica, 2 days, ~100mi on gravel Forest Service roads near Kalispell, MT. Never a crowd but big enough to be fun. C&V themed, but any bicycle is acceptable. I like that philosophy. Supports a montessori school.
Oh yeah, lot's of 50+ experienced cyclists. 100% laid back atmosphere.

edit: Re-visiting the website, I see vintage mountain bikes are the theme this year. Still, all bikes accepted.
The event dates have been pulled up from late Aug/early Sep, to July 8-10 - apparently to avoid the Montana western wildfire peak.



edit: Don't like wool, or lycra or anything tight - khaki shorts + collared short sleeve cotton shirt is cool, too! No pretense.

Racing season for me began last Sunday, MTB XC. I have another in 2 weeks and then every month after that until December. My goal is to win a couple for my age category. I'll target a couple of Gran Fondos too for my road racing fix and maybe a UCI road race or two if I see any I fancy doing.

Other than that, on a purely social ride level, a trip to Belgium to ride around Flanders with friends and then Denmark later in the year.

If it works out, I'll be riding CaNDak again. It's the follow-on to the North Dakota CANDISC ride that ended in 2017 after 25 years. Numbers are low for the seven day ride--under 100--and average age of riders continues to creep upward, around 60 or so.

RAMROD (Ride Around Mt. Rainier in One Day). We get riders from all over the world. Done it many times, but it's now been a few years. I registered, now I have to train! Going DH skiing tomorrow. ~20,000' the last few times, slaughters my legs and back. I'm trying for a single digit bib number. I'll be down to my 26 X 30 here and there.

Wonder what the current age of the oldest finisher could be?

Did that ride on a tandem and single bike in my 30s and each time I did it I vowed I would never subject myself to that level of suffering again. Then the next year would arrive and I would look at the sign-up page. Best of luck to you.

I flew out to Seattle with my bike in '97 (geeze, that's 25 years ago!) to do the double century STP (Seattle to Portland) ride with my brother. Next on our list was RAMROD but he moved and we never got organized to do it, what with jobs and growing families... Still sounds like fun! I think...

I did CANDISC in 2006. Had a fun time. One afternoon we went to the Lawrence Welk homestead. I can brag that I have seen the bed he was born in.

Not really summer , but I plan to attend Eroica California at the end of this month. I have done every year and I really like seeing all the nice bikes and great folks . I am a solo rider normally and I do not race so this is a nice change for me. Cino is on my bucket list to do and I hope that happens within the next couple of years as I don't want to age out!

AFAIK, the oldest finisher has been 83, on a tandem no less. At least on their last couple of rides, they started way before the usual start time. The oldest single bike finisher that I've noticed on one of my rides was 80. It's a very tough ride to do at that age. I've also seen the #1 bib not finish on a couple of RAMRODs. One has to cross the finish line before 8pm to be considered a finisher. My wife and I at 67 and 69 finished with just a few minutes to spare on our tandem. We had a 45' mechanical and it was 105° at the bottom of Cayuse, excuses, excuses..

We are planning a ride around Hokkaido in northern Japan. 8 days and 350km. A tour of Switzerland is in the works, it should be around 3 days and around 250km.

That will get you fewer and fewer bragging rights each year as the younger generation has no idea who he was. I wonder what will happen to the homestead in time. One has to make a point of getting there, and without his name recognition...

I had a streak on CANDISC from 2004-2017, EXCEPT 2006 when a wedding interfered. The relatives knew they weren't supposed to schedule anything in early August but... It looks like this year's route will be similar to '06 (and some other years). I like the route. My daughter and I broke our tandem record of almost 50 mph heading down the hill into Bismarck, surpassed a few years later in the Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park with over 50 mph on CANDISC.

There was a group from BF, C&Vers mainly, who used to do the Dairyland Dare on vintage bikes. That group fell apart plus COVID hit. I need to think about doing that ride again. It's easy drive for me to the start in Dodgeville, WI, and the terrain is a challenge. I do the 100k which has around 5,500 ft of climbing. There are a lot of hills in SW WI. Maybe it's time to get my '78 Trek TX 900 road worthy again, .

I really like BAM, Bicycling Around MN, but that canceled this year again. COVID really interrupted that ride.

Starting out the group ride season with the 5 boro bike tour. The only other event I have planned at the moment is to ride the Empire State trail from Buffalo to NYC, but doing that solo.

I'm generally a solo rider and have not participated in a group ride since a charity bikeathon when I was in high school nearly 50 years ago. Started thinking of a group ride a few years ago then Covid hit and everything was cancelled. Now that things are going again I signed up for a ride that isn't too far from me this Saturday. 75 miles and about 3500 feet of climbing. We'll see how it goes.

I also have a ticket to ride RAMROD this year. This will be my 3rd time, but the last time I rode it was 10 years ago. Not sure what made me sign up again? Senility? Insanity?

I don’t stray too far from my Norman, OK home. I try to ride one of the Tulsa Tough gran fondos every year in June, and the Norman Conquest here in Norman every July. They both benefit good causes and the atmosphere in Tulsa is always great.
I might try to add the Tour de Meers through the Wichita Wildlife Refuge in SW Oklahoma this year.

Man, I’m really struggling with the motivation this year. I used to plan my year around events but the saddle time and miles just aren’t there right now. Several other priorities in play. I’m still hopeful and am wondering how fast I can get myself in shape for multi day overnight rides. I’m still walking 18 holes every morning but it’s not a good substitute for riding. I think I still would like to do some events but not crazy about training for them. I did ride 60 miles yesterday at a slow pace but usually by this time of year I’m doing 80-100 mile rides regularly. Time will tell.

I kinda feel that too. I'm not sure it is the slow recovery from chronic illness or what, but I am definitely less motivated. Maybe not forcing myself out every morning for that commute?

Plans for this year? Only a couple of well defined plans:

1. I've done 48 double centuries, and would like to make it to 50 this year. For sure I would like to do the Eastern Sierra Double, and want to make that my 50th. That means I have to do another double between now and early June.

2. I started Cycle America's ride across the US years ago, and got as far as Northfield MN before other things got in the way. This year, I am riding from Northfield to Buffalo with that group. Can't wait for that ... I love touring.
