Can anyone talk to me about the dirt section of KSR? It's bound to be mud by this weekend.

Nope - this was in no way shape or form a USAC race this year, and it was our best year ever from an admin and logistical standpoint. Though we were down in numbers, it was still the largest road race in North America. Everyone who stayed away for silly reasons missed a great race...

What's a "pirate race"?

A race that requires everyone to dress up like Pirates.

Basically it is the term for any non-USAC mass start race (I believe). For example, Quabbin was for many years a "pirate race".

Oh. Thanks. I never heard that term before. 'So many designations and classifications these days... Dressing up like pirates could be a new one. I'd go for that.

Bark worse than bite. The usual thing where people get all worked up by dirt but it's not really any worse than most roads in New England. It goes uphill for most of it, the downhill part is over quickly and is not technical. Maybe the rain makes it a big sticky, but the rain may also get rid of the gravelly bits.

How does the second day of KSR usually play out? Do groups frequently get away and stay away on the first climb or does most of the field tend to stay together until the final climb?

I've only done it once but it stayed together. The KOM climb in the middle is steep for a few minutes but it's not really long enough to break things apart, and there's a lot of flat coming into the finale. Conserve energy as much as possible, the last 10k is basically just an exercise contest.

i was far otb last year but i imagine the roads in between the first kom and the finish would be a spectacular place to waste energy if you're not careful. i remember lots and lots of head/cross winds.

a group might get away on a kom sprint, but i think they almost always get brought back. the lead in to the finish is...fast.

Yeah the KOM sprints are mostly what I'm thinking about. I'm still entertaining wildly unrealistic hopes of scoring some points there.

my advice: stop checking it, look on thursday/friday when you're packing, but other than that ignore it. you're going to race regardless so no sense stressing about something you can't control.

Thanks, big boy pants on. I did great in the rain at Standish.

Headed out on the TT bike this afternoon again. Felt good for a short spin yesterday, going to try a similar course to stage 3 today.

i haven't registered yet (getting down to the wire...leaning strongly toward it), but i did check the weather forecasts a few minutes ago. i'll probably race, but i also don't have any burning need to race in $hit weather, and not having to TT friday ~noon and then immediately drive 10 hours to VT would be kind of a good thing.

weather underground is the most pessimistic -- rain likely at the end of stage 1, as well as at some point during stage 2. NOAA is fairly upbeat.

talk here in north carolina is how shocked people are that they straight up canceled the masters fields. i figured they'd have been combined before canceled.

It really doesn't look that bad. We'll probably get rained on a couple times. NBD.

Hmmm, to chime in or not, that is the question.

10 hours to Vermont! Are you driving a Tesla?
