Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp 330

Was looking to upgrade to this wheelset.

Any suggestion on tires, both brands and size (23? 27?)

I had been riding on Conti 400s 700x23 on my current aluminum wheels.

Thanks

25mm / 28mm will work on the firecrest rims without ballooning.

But just make sure your frame have enough clearance for the wider tires.

I would contact Zipp. If you're paying big bucks for aero wheels, you probably want to take full advantage of that.

They recommend their own 25c tire for the rim, so I'd imagine most 25c tires would work. Michelins would fit larger than the label would imply.

However, Zipp admits that there might be fitment issues on some bikes due to the extra width. What frame are these going on?

Which version of the 303 are you looking at? There have been... a few.

More info would be nice as to which version of the 303s you're after and what you want from your tires. Like Cypress mentioned, I've got a pair of rim brake 303 firecrest clinchers and the 25mm Michelins I run measure out at 28mm at a little over 100psi, which would be an issue on a lot of (relatively) older frames.

FWIW I'm running 25mm Conti Gatorskin tubulars on 303 Firecrests.. I run them around 120psi and have plenty of room.

It depends on your bike and the Zipps you're getting. I ran 303 Firecrest wheels on my old Roubaix with 25 mm Conti Grand Prix 4000. Great combo. Now I'm running 28 mm Conti Grand Prix 5000 on my Zipp 303 NSW, but they're being used with a newer frame that has the clearance for 28 mm tires. I like both widths, frankly, but many feel the 28 mm is smoother and faster.

Very nice looking bike!

You don't really put Gatorskins on a Cervelo with Zipp wheels do you?

You can lie to make be feel better.

In response to a bunch of the above posts:

I was looking at the Frirecrest 303 for clinchers

Like Chubby715, I have a Cervelo R3 (although mine is a model year older), so I have clearance for 70 x 25, or even 700 x 28

And Zipp's website recommends their own brand of 700 x 25,

It’s really hard to go wrong with Conti Grand Prix 5000, in my opinion. I run them on my Zipp 303 NSW. I ran 4000s on my 303 Firecrests. They smooth, fast, and durable. I’d give 28 mm tires a shot just for the contrast to your 23 mm. I find them a touch more comfortable than 25 mm tires, with no loss in performance.

Which year does that make your R3? It was only a few years ago that they increased the clearance, so be sure. It might have been 2018.
