Maillard Hub Question

1986-87 ish Maillard hubs on a Schwinn Tempo, seems that was a stock choice. Bearings are smooth. It says 'sealed' on the face and wondering if I can pull these and re-grease and not mess up the 'seal'

That seal is pressed on the cone and should come off with the cone as it unscrews from the axle. Smiles, MH

Yeah, doesn't that "sealed" dust cap spin with the axle?

Unlike removing a vintage Campy Record dust cap, this should be a breeze.

The axle doesn’t spin…just sayin’.

But that said, the dust cap should be pressed in place and has to be pried out just like most dust caps of that era.

When working with these stamped steel dust caps/seals they can easily be deformed when prying them off/out. I have used sockets, and a hammer, of varying sizes to act as a form to reestablish the cap's flat/roundness. Sometimes a slight prying out of the cap's ring/edge is needed to stay put in the shell or over the cons. Needle nose pliers works well for this trick.

BTW if you do take these hubs apart carefully track/record the size and number of balls used. Some of these hubs had odd sizes or numbers. Andy

For removing the sealed cap, I use a tire pry on the outer edge and tap from the back with the axel or such. Sometimes I need to rotate the pry when tapping. I can usually remove without distortion.

Not helpful. Read @Mad Honk's post before mine for more info.

@etherhuffer should weigh in with the quick detail. And to answer your question in the op, you don't need to do anything to the seal. Just leave it in place on the cone when you remove one cone (or both) from the axle as the first step in overhauling your hub.

btw, great pic! You can easily tell what's going on here. I wish more posters would include a pic like this. It saves dozens of questions.

The seal spins, so it must be connected to cone. More of a barrier than a seal. I will open this up really gently and clean then replace. Ah, the smell of mineral spirits in the morning. Smells like.....bearings

That was meant in good humor, lost in translation to internet. No worries here. My attempt at humor fell flat so apologies here.

It’s not easy to see from the photo that the seal is attached to the cone. Some are, many are not…even in Maillards. And I don’t see you taking issue with the two others who seemed to have missed how the seal is attached in the “easy to understand photograph”.

And, to set you straight, axles don’t spin.

Haven't you heard? "Axles don't spin." So neither do cones. Not even the one you pictured that isn't mounted in a frame.

That guy is truly unbearable.

Nope cones don’t spin either. Thank you for pointing that out.

On autos, spindles are stationary and axles rotate. On bikes, axles are stationary and spindles rotate. A little confusion is understandable.

Wow. A thread about overhauling a hub on a dismounted wheel, and here you are with this.

Wow back at ya! You can spin the wheel or you can spin the axle. Since the ultimate goal is to spin the wheel while it is attached to the bicycle so as to propel the bike down the road, it doesn’t matter than it spins when dismounted from the wheel. In the end, the axle (and cones and dust cap if the cap is attached to the cones) is not the spinny bit.

Why are you continuing to be so testy? Can't you walk away without having the last word? Andy (who is walking away from this thread as it's spiraling down into personal insults)
