For me it really is what joy it gives me on the road, how it feels during the ride. Everything else is secondary. I will say as I downsized a bunch over the last couple of years I have tended to keep the more modern setups. Not really as a goal but I think each time I thought about what to sell age, and body issues came into play. Knees are jacked although they still don't bother me riding. But I worry about them now and figure more gears and spinning is safer for them. Then with the separated shoulder now compromised it bugs me while riding sometimes so I guess less reaching for ST shifters maybe better. And then I've noticed when the jacked up joint in my left thumb is bothering me I like to keep pressure off it while riding. So there too, shifting away from lot of DT use. Of course now I've got arthritis in other finger joints so more to consider I guess.

Joy - It is sort of an intangible, eh.
I still run vintage as friction downtube & threaded steel forks = the glue for my classic ethos.

Gimme categories. Racing / Sport touring / Other - given my collection. Then I might attempt a ranking.

I haven't invested like you, but if I did = Campy Record 10 (from around '04) on all, and triple on more than a few. Short shallow bars instead of traditional Cinelli rounds, would be my concession to age.

Good question.... and I am not 100% clear on how I would answer

Hands down the best riding, most magic feel from any bike I have ridden has been on my period dura ace friction shift 84 team miyata (double butted tubing) with wheelset with sanshin hubs, mavic gel330 rims and challenge elite pro tires 25mm at 130 psi. that wheelset is bit light for me so I ride it mostly with a dura ace hub, mavic ma40 clinchet and panracer Gravel kings in 28. it is still really nice ride with the heavier wheelset, but not as magjc

my 85 team miyata (triple butted tubing) is is the very close second in ride either with 28mm GP5000 clincher (tubed) or Vittoria 30m Corsa Control Tubular, but it is my daily driver and go to bike with the range and convenience of 105 5800 11speed.

So it is combination and what IMHO cannot be discounted is the impact of light wheelset with good tires (the 84 team with some super heavy bontrager 25mm tires and thick thorn resistant tubes felt like a old truck, simple change to gravel kings 28mm and conti racel lite tubes completely changed it)

Excellent point.

Wheels and groups can really bring a good frame out of the time-travel unintended doldrums.
My current attraction to C&V frames is the potential performance I think I can wring out of them with modern stuff.
The more I do this, the more respect I have for the craftsmen who built them, lately Rossin and Marinoni.

When I rank mine, I rank the current package based on it's present performance as a bike vs. my others.
I know this dilutes my credibility in some C&V ways. I'm fine with that, don't deserve what I don't serve.

I ride with other riders that are 100% on modern bikes.
Cool, but no one stops them to ask about their bikes.
Every time, for years, on organized rides. Can't beat it.
