Does that matter? It's an end goal, something for the long term to work towards which may never be fully achieved.

You might as well tell the same thing to any politician who promises to ease traffic congestion that it's impractical too.

Now ask someone whose end goal is to lose weight or become fit. If those are end goals, what are they going to do after they achieve end? Quit cycling?

End goal? Fitness and to see some cool places. I am fortunate enough to enter into various century rides in different parts of the country. Doing so allows me to see new areas while having fun. I have also met some pretty nice folks at the same time.

My pendulum has swung back toward the touring side. Road riding in the same old areas doesn't excite me like it used to. I have done far more unsupported touring miles than road miles this year.

2200 miles, 6 races and one overnight camping trip would do it for me.

I go on frequent bike rides in order to get more fit and more skilled at riding. The reason I want to increase my fitness and skill is to permit frequent rides. Biking is both its own requirement and reward for me.

Also, because I enjoy being outside, it's a good way for my wife and me to spend time together, it serves as a social utility with friends as well, there could conceivably come a day when I'll have to turn to bikes for transportation, and a bunch of other reasons. But mostly because I just like to ride. I didn't know I was supposed to have an end goal.

My goal is to ride off road dirt touring/bikepacking while keeping the exercise to a reasonable level.

My goal of cycling is for health reasons...Trying to avoid diabetes, obesity and heart disease. All the clinical care and drugs for those issues cost way more than the seven bikes in the garage.

No specific end goal. I ride for exercise.

I set some short / intermediate goals for motivation, like “ride x miles this month/year”, or do specific length ride by a certain date.

So I guess my end goal is to keep riding.

Just having fun is my end goal .... but since I am not at the end yet ........ I guess i am failing? If I i find I am just having fun at the beginning of the ride, i that, then, the end? Or have I scored and end goal? Is that like an own goal?

If we were not getting constant rain I could be out scoring end goals and not here typing ..... but now I have to worry about how to track my score.

Ride a bike on every continent, ride a brevet in every state, ride every 1200k on the planet, ride the Transcontinental route, ride the Northern route, ride the Southern route, bikepack everywhere, ride Land's End to John o' Groats, break the hour record for a 100yo in 38 years, ride in Spain, ride in Italy, ride around India, ride up the biggest climb in Hawaii, ride around Mt St Helens, ride around Lake Tahoe, learn to idle on my unicycle, earn both La Société Charly Miller and Adrian Hands Society. But mostly just go for a ride.

It used to be the physical aspect, but in the last year or two, it's been for mental clarity and stress management as well. The end goal is all of the above which translates into enjoyment and focus.

I’ve told this story before. My mom’s dad had a heart attack at 80 and survived. He was 91 when he was knocked off his bike by a driver in downtown Cortez, CO. My parents neither made it to 80. But maybe if I keep pedaling…

I can relate. My dad and his older brother both had heart attacks around 54-55. They had the family history, but they also had terrible lifestyles: ate too much, drank too much, smoked too much, had stressful, sedentary jobs. Coincidentally, my generation, my siblings/cousins are pretty fanatical about fitness--running, cycling, skiing, hiking, open water swimming, triathlon. We can't change our genetics, but we can change lifestyle.

Might be difficult to change the stress level as a professional. Some can, and some can't.

It's always been for fun. Even when I was racing competitively, it was for fun (it certainly wasn't for the money). My only goal is to get to wherever it is I am riding, or whatever distance I set for that particular day.
