First day with above freezing temps in over week. Sunny and in the 40's took a easy going Sunday ride to Alma and back on the SS Nishiki about 15 miles round trip with 600 or so feet climb going up.

Bike trail is still dry and clear no snow or ice and no other riders the whole way.



The junk bikes are still not surprised no one has that no one has taken the Huffy BSO it surprisingly does have some nice components.

The Columbia River Gorge Highway is the road shown in the pictures. It is an historic road that was the only way along the Columbia River connecting eastern Oregon/Washington to Portland Or. The current highway runs along the river and replaced this section from Sandy Or to I think Hood River os somewhere west of Hood River. It is now closed to traffic and is used for hiking and biking. This is one of the tunnels that was part of the road.

I apologize to those who live there and know more. I really miss the PNW.

Some of you may have seen triple trailer trucks on the west coast.
This road was the inspiration for triples. Consolidated Freightways, now out of business, developed the triple trailer approach to be able to get around the tight turns for hauling freight, an alternative to barges. In the 30's they built their first tractor trailer to meet their needs. It had a hand hammered AL hood and AL cab. The first in the industry. They sold their first one to Hyster in 1952, IIRC. There is one in the Smithsonian. It was called a Freightliner. Google their history. I worked for them in the late 70', early 80's. The first drawings for the vertical muffler shield you see today, was done by me! One of my first CAD experiences using CADAM, now Catia.

Yep, that is the new Mitchell point tunnel that is almost done, the old one was blown up when they widened I84.

There's a lot to dig into as they are in the final phases of completing the whole thing that will allow for riding from Portland to The Dalles without going on I84 totaling 68 miles.

After this, there is "only" about 1.3 miles left from the bottom of Mitchell Pt. to Hood River which will be very challenging as the city, county, neighbors and businesses don't want to give up a single inch for this. It will get done but its tooth and nail right down at the wire.

Its still a couple of years away at least I think but it will get done, crappy to me that its such a struggle now that its almost done.

No need to apologize, I am fascinated by any and all history related to The Gorge, well aware of the trucking and impacts of the hiway on it and it on the hiway, big business and a huge factor in the forming of many things along the way.

My Dad was a trucker and ran triples for years through the Gorge, don't know when he started driving out there.

Also have a best friend at Freightliner now that runs their wind tunnel and paints/helps with R+D, prototypes etc.

Been going out there since I was about 12 to cut Christmas trees at my Mom's Mom's sisters place in Wyeth, she and her husband owned a big piece of The Gorge there with BPA power line rights and the rock shop/restaurant/cabins that was forcefully sold off after she died.

I love it out there, every bit of it, could ride there every week if I could get away with it.

It's been a little while since I added to this thread. I've mostly just been commuting the past few weeks, but I got out a nice ~22-mile loop from my home into the Berkeley Hills., around 2100' climbing. It was a beautiful day in the east SF bay with some scattered clouds, not much wind, and mild fall temps in the mid-50s.

Oak trees speak to me. This grove of oaks makes a nice backdrop to some Tilden Park signage pointing the way toward a fun-for-youngins steam trea that tours a landscape dotted with miniature scenes.


On my way back home, I meandered through the UC campus, avoiding strikers. Here I stopped at South Hall--built in 1873, it is the older surviving building on campus.


Last photo of the day...Adjacent to South Hall (pictured above) is Sather Tower, a.k.a. The Campanile, designed by John Galen Howard and completed in 1915.

Did a nice solo 35 miles out to NE Oklahoma City. Passed the Frontier City Park, been there

since 1958. Sorta of a western themed hill belly/redneck amusement park, now owned by Six Flags of Texas. Eight years younger than me, and I only remember one visit. One of the summer concerts had Ringo and His All Starr band. And on that tour, my hero, Ian Hunter was part of the band. Have to admit a tear or two when Ian sang All The Young Dudes, “my brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones…” with Ringo playing drums. Happy Thanksgiving to all you dude’s.

Take another close look at that last photo. There is a hardman in the shot, and it was thinking of him that gave me a burst of badly-needed inspiration to get up the very last pitch. I didn't feel comfortable checking out the details of his setup (though he did have it decked out with mini-LED twinkle lights!), but there's a stem clamped to the seatpost, which somehow holds the carbon fiber 'socket'. What an awesome guy.

Lastly, here's RCMoeur describing the return route; others are still rolling in from their descent from Dobbins Lookout. Thanks for looking out for us this year, Richard - hopefully you can ride in 2023. And there's Saguaro again, on the far right this time:

Nice short Thanksgiving day ride on local trails back roads fairly nice weather in the 40's with no wind.





Some snow ice in the shady spots I expect some snow cover in places till about next May. six months away.

This statue is around 30 feet tall I think.

Sometimes I take a loop that takes me past the First Methodist Church in Richardson, TX
( a northern suburb of Dallas). It's located on their grounds.

It's probably online somewhere but I'm guessing this church was built around 15 or so years ago so this statue was put up in that time frame. Of course they could have purchased a really old statue to erect.

Next time I pedal past I'll look to see if there is a placard giving specifics.
