Not that hard to swallow. Have you looked at the price of a GoPro action camera and the size of a GoPro? Though the GoPro provides way way more usefulness for other stuff besides making a record of what hit you.

However for basic video recording and saving for random incidents, it might be worth it if one isn't looking for material to post their antics on YouTube or elsewhere.

For several years Garmin's been doing some video recording with a few of it's automobile navigators. Those of us not up to date with Garmin's automobile navigators might still know them as nuvi's but for quite a few many years have been called various versions of Garmin Drive. Their incident detecting with them is not too shabby. Not foolproof by any means, but it does work.

Glad that Garmin's getting it into their cycling products. Wish they hadn't given up on their action camera they use to have, the Garmin Virb.

I just received an email from Garmin about these units. I like the fact that the camera can be set to only record when the radar detects an oncoming vehicle. Really, that's the only footage you need unless, as Iride01 said, you need something for your YouTube channel.

As it is now, I have the Varia RVR315 radar, a Bontrager Flare rear light, and a GoPro Hero 8 on my seatpost. It makes things a bit cluttered. The Varia RCT715 would do all of that in a much cleaner installation, and the battery life is much better than the GoPro. I may pull the trigger on one.

I thought about a goprobut we ride too much I ride at least 3 times a day most days and at least 30 miles a day or more. I would have to spend way too much time dealing with cameras. but I would like a camera that captures all the crazy things I see sometimes.

Still this wouldn't be the camera for you then. Unless the crazy things you see are behind you. Then I'd have to ask why you are looking behind so much to even see those crazy things.

Y’all dudes better check the reviews from such credible reviewers as DC Rainmaker and GPLama, because the unit does not function well, nor does it function for the kinds of uses you/we imagine it would.

I really don't see anything that would send up a red flag to me. Image stabilization would be nice, but that may be a software update in the future. I'd be pairing it with a 1030+, so no loss of features, and I have plenty of 128gb cards laying around.
What would be nice? Having the reviewer ease off on the coffee! Yikes, he talks so fast it gets really annoying after a bit.

I'm slightly disappointed, as I've been waiting YEARS for somebody to release an all-in-one light-camera-radar product, but I still think it will do the job. Perhaps a few rounds of firmware updates will iron out some issues? I hope so.

Still, it's 2022 and they're offering 1080p max? Looking at the number plate readability in some of the shots, it's quite hit and miss. Sometimes perfect, other times illegible!

You don’t need one of these yourself. If enough other riders have them then drivers will start to assume you might and behave accordingly.

There is a thread about this in the road forum. People are posting mount options, they're is sample video, etc. Everybody who has much interest in this device should read both as well as red dit to gather as much info as they need.

All of the current Garmin devices do. There's no reason to expect this wouldn't.

... but confirm before you buy, or shop with a store with a return policy. Should be standard practice for stuff like this.

GPLama says otherwise.

I have plugged it in many times I think the older radar would run while charging but the lasted one would not.

I'll go with what the two experts say. It's supposed to work. There's no reason it shouldn't. If it doesn't work for you, it might be an issue with your unit.

Are you turning it on after plugging it in? When I plug in mine in it will turn off but I then turn it back on.

How bright is the light? I have the no light Varia. It is great. I also have an old Dinotte Daytime Red rear light. There is NO light close to the brightness of that one. It will be hard for me to give that up.

That's interesting the charging question came up here. The only thing I had seen before now is that it can't be charged while working, so it's good to hear otherwise.

This seems to assume that drivers are out there preying on cyclists.

Most accidents are probably just that the driver got distracted or did something stupid. I doubt knowing that cyclist have cameras will change the number of accidents and incidents.

What such cameras will do is give some evidence and hopefully help verify each others story as to what happened.
