It's hilarious how over-engineered this is. This has got to be 30 times more expensive than a good push-powered lawn mower, and it couldn't be anywhere near as efficient.

What’s the threshold for “only a fool would spend more than $xx on a mower?”

I don't own a mower. I pay for people to show up at my house every week to cut/trim/blow while I'm at work. Am I a fool? Maybe, but I'm not burning most of a weekend day of bike/family/nap time, and I'm contributing to the support of other families.

Well, if that's your answer, you'd be a fool to pay $1 for a lawn mower unless it was to resell it or to let the hired help use.

My lawn varies. In Spring, especially if it's really warm after a wet winter, I could use a scythe. Come summer, especially during drought years, it's mostly a matter of cutting down the occasional weed.

We had a small "lawn" area in front which is now baked dirt. There is a 40x40 area out back which is covered by a carpet of pine needles. In "spring" I have to cut the weeds out there because the fire dep't comes to inspect. After that there isn't enough moisture for anything to grow.

I got a double-dose of Britney from my girls - LOL. However, I have successfully implanted my music preferences in their core. Both times I've seen Green Day in concert, my girls were with me, and singing along just as loudly.
Unfortunately, neither were much interested in bicycles.

Thank you for mentioning scything, @beng1 and @koala logs.
90 Minutes of Scything by Timothy Takemoto, on Flickr
I even, or especially, use my scythe on slopes where it is less dangerous than a bush cutter, which is like an entry road or electric bike -- innovation that cuts the exercise and fun out of something that is "uncomfortable."
Scything, like golf and the exercise that I recommend, strengthens rotational muscles that are essential for, but not trained by, cycling.
Cut the comfort.

Now here's some unreasonably priced innovation, actually kind of on-topic:

Beng's got a point with the scythe, it's faster and a great way to show off the muscles to the ladies.

Mind you, if you let your grass get tall enough to benefit from a scythe, the Homeowners Association will be all over you.
