Boringly technical discussion of bike geometry and fit follows. Feel free to scroll past:
I was puzzling over why the saddle on the Litespeed seems to be slammed forward in the cradle of the zero setback post I bought. After a bit of analysis, I conclude it's a combination of several factors.
1. Because I have short thighs for my leg length, my saddles are generally farther forward than average.
2. Because my legs are long for my height, and I point my toes when I pedal, my saddle height is higher than average.
3. Because the virtual seat tube angle at 73 degrees is more slack than my other bikes
4. Because the ACTUAL seat tube angle is even more slack than 73 degrees, since the seat tube is curved to shorten the seat stays
5. Because the clamping part of the saddle rails on the Fizik Aliante VSX is about 1 cm farther forward, relative to the contact points, than my other saddles.
The funny thing is, with the saddle slammed all the way forward in a zero-setback post, the saddle setback (measured saddle nose to center of BB) is about a cm greater than my other bikes with different saddles. So I measured the distance between what is functionally the back of the saddle and the tip of the nose, and the Fizik is a cm shorter. Which just goes to show you that measuring setback that way only works when all your saddles are the same.
In any case, Sunday's ride confirmed that the saddle height and setback are correct, no matter how odd they may look.

here are the offending pieces of garbage that caused all my woes with the Avalanche. One is compressed, the other is supposed to be in one piece. Absolute garbage. To be honest I don't know how these dainty little things held up as long as they did. I am not nice to that truck.

Sunday while I was cleaning up the garage from the engine work on the avalanche. I couldn't find the 10 mm wrench I used to put on the battery cable. It was the last thing I did before pushing it outside. I looked for 20 minutes before I finally said enough, It'll turn up. After I mopped the floor and put all the other tools and parts away I had still not located that wrench. I said screw it and went in to wash my hands and found that 10 mm wrench on the edge of the laundry tub. I must have been tired to bring it inside and leave it there and not remember doing it.
I always find the stuff in the last place I look.

Part of the kitchen reno will be installing a filter and (if necessary) water softener so that I can direct-plumb the next machine. I need get some hardness test strips with my next order of... stuff, though.
You've got some really hard water, don't you? If I had to descale more than once per year, I'd totally install a filter.

The last piece for Interim Build #2 on the Litespeed arrives today - a titanium crank arm fixing bolt to match the one that came with the crankset. I never realized that I had titanium on a bike all these years, but apparently titanium crank bolts were what came with 7410 cranks, so that's what's been on the Ritchey all these years. And here I thought the titanium Dumont #5 tweezers I 'borrowed' from work were the first titanium I had.
BTW, titanium tweezers, especially #5s, are NOT good for watchmaking. Titanium is too flexy, so the tips can twist and shoot screws the size of this . into the Great Beyond.

As for frequency, Rancillio wants you to run a little through the machine and then wait 25' and do it a 1/4 tank at a time. Then rinse with two tanks of fresh water. That's a couple hours. Supposed to do it every three months with purified water or softened water. I use both.
